Explaining the Death Penalty in NieR: Automata

Explaining the Death Penalty in NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata may not initially seem punitive, but it incorporates stringent roguelike mechanics that can severely hinder your progress following death, particularly if it occurs in a challenging scenario. The repercussions of dying can result in the permanent loss of items you have invested significant time and effort in acquiring and upgrading—potentially derailing your late-game experience.

However, hope is not lost instantly upon death. Players have an opportunity to reclaim their belongings before they disappear permanently. Here’s a detailed look at the consequences of dying in the game and guidance on how to recover your body, thereby minimizing the damage to your gameplay.

In NieR: Automata, death entails a significant penalty: you will lose any experience points (XP) gained since your last save, along with all equipped Plug-In Chips. Although you can find additional Plug-In Chips as you progress and can restore your previous loadout upon revival, some of these chips are quite rare, and acquiring unique ones can be an expensive endeavor. Notably, upon respawning, your equipped Plug-In Chip set will be reset, necessitating the selection of a new configuration or a previous preset.

Fortunately, the Plug-In Chips lost upon death aren’t permanently gone; you have a single chance to return to the site of your demise to recover them as well as the potential XP. If you die again before retrieving your body, all chips from your original loadout will be irretrievably lost.

Upon respawning after a defeat, your primary objective should be to recover your body. A small blue icon representing your body will appear on the map, enabling you to track its location easily. Approaching this spot and interacting with it will allow the retrieval of all your Plug-In Chips. You will also face two options regarding the fate of your body:

Repair

Choosing this option will not restore your XP, but your fallen character will become an AI companion, aiding you until its eventual demise.

Retrieve

This choice allows you to reclaim all XP lost before your last save, providing a pathway to recover your progress.

Regardless of which selection you make, you will have the opportunity to re-equip your old Plug-In Chips, effectively overriding your current setup. Alternatively, you may opt to store these chips back in your inventory without equipping them.
