Mark your calendars for the premiere of Star Trek: Section 31, which is scheduled to air on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. Recent updates from Star Trek’s official social media platforms have provided exciting new insights into the film’s intriguing characters.
Initially announced in 2019, Paramount+ had intended to launch a Section 31 series featuring Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as the Mirror Universe’s Philippa Georgiou. However, due to production complications and the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was sidelined for several years. In April 2023, over four years following its initial greenlight, the studio confirmed the reimagining of the series into a movie format, set for release in early 2025.
The first glimpse of the film’s characters was revealed at the San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Recently, fans gained additional insights through newly released character profiles on the official Star Trek Instagram page. Profiles have been shared for Fuzz (Sven Ruygrok), Melle (Humberly González), Zeph (Robert Kazinsky), and Quasi (Sam Richardson), showcasing their intriguing backstories and roles within the Section 31 narrative.
Character Spotlight: Fuzz
Fuzz is characterized as “The Maniac.”His profile indicates an emotional range that unpredictably oscillates between joy and fury. Interestingly, Fuzz appears to be Vulcan, a twist given that Vulcans traditionally embody logic over emotion. The Star Trek universe has previously depicted Vulcans casting aside their logical tendencies, leading to chaotic outcomes. However, Fuzz may also be interpreted as a Romulan, a species historically known for emotional depth—a fitting profile for an operative within Section 31, as the Federation often seeks intelligence on the Romulans.
Character Spotlight: Melle
Melle is introduced as “The Lover”and is confirmed to be Deltan—a species lesser-known in Star Trek lore, with Lieutenant Ilia being a notable Deltan from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Deltans possess a compelling sexual allure, so much so that they typically commit to celibacy upon joining Starfleet. Nevertheless, Melle has broken this cultural norm, leveraging her captivating nature for Section 31’s objectives.
Character Spotlight: Zeph
Zeph, labeled “The Machine,”is depicted with a mechanical exoskeleton that he wears continuously. This advanced suit is more than mere armor; it’s equipped with a variety of tools that enhance his capabilities during missions for Section 31. Initial fan assumptions linked his exoskeleton to Borg technology, but the actor has clarified that Zeph is not an ex-Borg. This marks a significant moment in Star Trek history, as Zeph will be the first character explicitly designed to use an exoskeleton for operational enhancements.
Character Spotlight: Quasi
Known as “The Enigma,”Quasi appears human at first glance but is actually a Chameloid—a unique species introduced in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Chameloids are shapeshifters, an advantageous trait for a covert operative in Section 31. His profile suggests a discontent with the idyllic vision of Utopia fostered by Starfleet, potentially hinting at a disillusionment shaped by his experiences with Section 31.
Star Trek has yet to unveil character profiles for Alok (Omari Hardwick) and Rachel (Kacey Rohl), two other key members from the recently released promotional materials. Be sure to follow the official Star Trek Instagram for the latest updates!
