Rupert Thorne emerges as a key player in Alexander Sartorius’s backstory within episode 6. A well-known crime boss from Gotham’s deep lore, Thorne was also recently introduced in Amazon’s animated series Caped Crusader. In the comics, he financially backed Alex’s ambition to develop a nuclear power plant, which ultimately leads to a horrific accident, transforming Sartorius into the glowing skeletal avenger known as Doctor Phosphorus.

Within the DCU, Alex’s intention behind pursuing nuclear fusion was to find a cure for cancer, requiring Thorne’s financial assistance. However, Thorne betrays him by selling Alex’s research to the oppressive Bialyan government. After finding out that Alex was feeding him false data, Thorne had dire consequences as he orchestrated the death of Sartorius’s family before throwing him into the nuclear reactor, thus dooming himself as Phosphorus embarked on a vengeful path with his lethal abilities.

The madam of the establishment is voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, who recently portrayed Nadia Maroni in The Penguin. In that series, Aghdashloo’s character operated the crime family while her husband, Sal, was incarcerated.
