Nicki Minaj, often referred to as the queen of rap, has had her share of rivalries within the hip-hop community. Among her notable feuds are those with Lil Kim, Remy Ma, Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, and Cardi B.
The discord between Minaj and Cardi B began during their collaboration in Motorsport in 2017. The feud escalated when Cardi B infamously threw a shoe at Minaj during Harper’s Bazaar ICONS Fashion Week party on September 7, 2018.
Approximately a month after this shoe-throwing episode, Cardi B spoke to W Magazine about her actions, attributing them to comments made by Minaj regarding her parenting skills. The rapper stated:
“I love my daughter. I’m a good-a*s f*cking mom. So for somebody that don’t have a child to say that? So many people want to say that party wasn’t the time or the place, but I’m not going to catch another artist in the grocery store or down the block.”
Nicki Minaj expressed feeling “mortified”by the shoe-throwing incident
In her W Magazine interview, Cardi B suggested that her tension with Nicki Minaj had been building long before the infamous incident:
“For a while now she’s been taking a lot of shots at me. I spoke to her twice before, and we came to an understanding. But she kept it going.”
Cardi revealed that the last straw for her was when Minaj liked and then quickly unliked a tweet that called into question her “mothering skills.”
Cardi, 31, also shared that she gave up a lucrative Bruno Mars tour to spend time with her daughter.
In contrast, Nicki Minaj painted a different picture on her Queen radio show on September 10, 2018. She expressed her feelings about the incident:
“The other night, I was a part of something so mortifying and so humiliating to go through. The way they passed by looking at this disgusting commotion, I will never forget. I was mortified.”
Minaj denied having made any disparaging remarks about Cardi B’s parenting, saying:
“I would never talk about anyone’s child or parenting. I don’t care about anyone’s parenting. I don’t give a s–t and it’s so crazy to me that people always need to make Onika the bad guy.”
She further reinforced her stance:
“I just want to let the world know that Onika Tanya Maraj would never, has never, and will never speak ill of anyone’s child.”
The “Swalla”rapper criticized the situation as “clown s***,”asserting she was “not a clown.”Furthermore, she described Cardi as “angry”and “sad,”adding:
“This is not funny and this is not about attacking. This is about getting this woman some f***ing help. This woman is at the best stage in her career and she’s out here throwing bottles and throwing shoes? Who the f**k is going to give her a f**king intervention?”
Minaj concluded by advising Cardi B to “get thick skin, baby girl,”and encouraged her to focus on her successes instead of on trivial matters.
Currently, both Nicki Minaj and Cardi B are working on their upcoming albums. Minaj recently revealed that instead of releasing a deluxe version of her fifth album, she plans to launch her sixth studio album, entitled Pink Friday 3. Meanwhile, Cardi B has confirmed that her second studio album is set to debut in 2024.
