The show, helmed by Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, alongside True Blood writer Alexander Woo, makes notable adaptations from the original book. Instead of focusing solely on the key plot, it tells a broader narrative through a collective of scientists and friends referred to as the Oxford Five. The San-Ti, part of the extraterrestrial race depicted in 3 Body Problem, are unveiled in the second episode. Dr. Ye Wenjie, a scientist affiliated with the Chinese military during the 1970s, discovers a means to amplify radio signals using the sun, which she utilizes to send a message into the cosmos. Her efforts attract a response from a pacifist alien, warning against replying, stating, “If you respond, we will come. Your world will be conquered.”Despite the warning, Wenjie responds, having lost faith in humanity and believing that they deserve conquest: “I will help you conquer this world,” she proclaims.
The first season gradually discloses information about this alien species. Known as the San-Ti in the Netflix adaptation and Trisolarians in Liu’s literature, they originate from a planet called Trisolaris, located within a star system characterized by a three-body problem. This leads to devastating Chaotic Eras marked by extreme, uninhabitable weather conditions. To endure these harsh phases, the San-Ti have mastered the technique of dehydrating themselves, allowing their bodies to be revived in water once the Chaotic Era subsides.
Upon receiving Wenjie’s communication, they dispatch an invading fleet to Earth, likely transporting their dehydrated forms. Prior to this invasion, the San-Ti deploy advanced sophons—highly evolved intelligence systems—for communication with humanity in preparation for their arrival, anticipated in roughly 400 years. Their interactions with humans primarily utilize written messages or radio signals, leaving their physical appearance ambiguous within the show. Notably, the sophons adopt human appearances when engaging with virtual reality elements. In one exchange, when Wade (portrayed by Liam Cunningham) queries a sophon about the true appearance of the San-Ti, it cryptically replies, “You wouldn’t like it.”
Physical Description of the San-Ti in Liu’s Books
Currently, the first season of 3 Body Problem focuses on the initial novel of Cixin Liu’s trilogy, which leaves room for further exploration of the San-Ti in later seasons. However, the texts provide limited clarity on the aliens’ physical appearance. Like the series, the Trisolarians in the novels possess the ability to dehydrate their bodies and can communicate through telepathy. Episode 4 of 3 Body Problem implies that the San-Ti struggle with the concept of deceit because their mode of communication might render lying untenable.
Additional clues hint that the aliens can manipulate light, suggesting possible bioluminescent properties. Some fan conjectures even posit that the San-Ti could be microscopic, sharing characteristics with tardigrades, given their dehydration capabilities. These creatures succeeded in creating sophons on a subatomic level, prompting speculation that their actual size could be insect-like. Interestingly, in Episode 5, the San-Ti intimidate humanity by proclaiming, “you are bugs.”
Will There Be a Revelation of the Aliens’ Appearance in the Series?
Unfortunately, Liu’s novels do not deliver a conclusive description of the San-Ti’s appearance, leaving it to viewers’ imaginations. The approach to this in the visual-centric TV series remains uncertain. Showrunner David Benioff shared insights in an interview with Mashable, indicating that the creative team likely has diverse interpretations of the aliens’ appearance. He further entertained the theory that the San-Ti could be as small as ladybugs, underlining the vast array of possibilities regarding their size. The eventual resolution concerning the San-Ti’s appearance may evolve as future seasons of 3 Body Problem unfold.
