Exploring “The Jewels Of The Old Republic”: Discovering Star Wars’ New Treasure Planets

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 3. The Star Wars universe has enriched its mythology once again, this time through the introduction of the Jewels of the Old Republic in the recent series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The story is anchored in the pirate realms of the galaxy and follows a group of four children—Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB—who hail from the enigmatic and lost world of At Attin.

As episode 3 unfolds, Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, better known as Crimson Jack, seeks to forge an alliance with the young adventurers, aiming to navigate their way back to At Attin. Initially, Jod appears to be a supportive guide, but it soon becomes clear that he is a pirate with ulterior motives, primarily his pursuit of buried treasure. Nevertheless, At Attin is just one of many fabled treasure planets, now part of a broader narrative involving the Jewels of the Old Republic.

The owl-like character, Kh’ymm, enlightens the children that At Attin stands as one of the Jewels of the Old Republic—legendary planets once hidden away for their own safety. Kh’ymm elaborates that, tragically, these celestial bodies met their demise long ago, leaving At Attin as the sole survivor encased in the lore of pirates and dreamers alike. The circumstances surrounding the destruction of these once-thriving worlds remain shrouded in mystery, coupled with the significance of At Attin’s solitary status.

Several hypotheses may explain the downfall of the other Jewels. One possibility suggests a destructive mentality among treasure seekers—if they couldn’t possess it, then no one should. Another likely theory points to darker motivations tied to At Attin itself. The suspicious behavior of local Supervisors and droids raises questions about their involvement.

Perhaps At Attin engaged in a desperate act of preservation, annihilating rival planets to safeguard its riches. It’s tempting to speculate that At Attin’s treasures represent a collection of the wealth hoarded from all destroyed worlds, an explanation for its continued secrecy and detachment from the outside galaxy. However, it is also conceivable that relentless treasure hunters, encompassing the pirates from Skeleton Crew, were responsible for the downfall of these fabled locations.
