Netflix’s latest thriller, Carry-On, featuring Jason Bateman, draws unexpected parallels with Disney’s beloved classic, Toy Story 2. Released exclusively on Netflix on December 13, 2024, Carry-On stars Taron Egerton as Ethan Kopek, a TSA employee. Bateman portrays the ominous Traveler, who coerces Ethan into letting a dubious package pass through airport security by threatening his pregnant girlfriend and friends, escalating the tension as he implies danger to Ethan himself.

At first glance, these two films might seem worlds apart—one targeting children and the other squarely aimed at adult thriller enthusiasts. However, they share intriguing similarities that extend beyond their thematic settings. Both involve significant plot elements centering around luggage and confined airport environments, revealing deeper narrative connections.

As Woody undergoes various preparations for travel in Al’s house, he encounters other toys like Jessie and Bullseye. Unbeknownst to him, the character of the Prospector, also known as “Stinky Pete,”is determined to ensure the toys join their fate on the flight regardless of Woody’s desire to return to Andy.

The climax intensifies as Jessie and Woody must escape from an aircraft taxiing on the runway, battling the Prospector to break free from their luggage entrapment. Although Carry-On presents a more sinister outcome with the Traveler’s intent to unleash deadly gas aboard the flight, both films culminate in gripping events that unfold on an airplane.

Conversely, the Traveler in Carry-On is decidedly more malevolent, willing to murder innocents to achieve his misguided goals. Yet, both characters share chilling similarities: they possess cold psychological profiles, a self-serving nature, and a condescending attitude, convinced in their misguided justifications. The parallels in their names—Traveler and Prospector—underscore the thematic connections between these two vastly different narratives.

Ultimately, despite significant disparities in genre and audience, Carry-On and Toy Story 2 reveal unexpected links, making them worthy of exploration.
