On September 21, 2024, radio and television personality Ricky Padilla shared an Instagram story that allegedly contained racist comments directed at SEVENTEEN member Vernon, who was seen at DJ Khaled’s LIV Miami. In his post, Ricky Padilla shared a video of Vernon seemingly standing and using his phone among the crowd enjoying the music, and he captioned it:
“Why we drinking with K-pop idol.”
For those unfamiliar, SEVENTEEN members Mingyu, Vernon, and Woozi recently attended DJ Khaled’s LIV Miami, where they were seen greeting the artist with hugs and handshakes.
The radio personality’s Instagram story quickly spread across social media, prompting backlash from fans who defended SEVENTEEN, emphasizing that the K-pop stars were invited to DJ Khaled’s event and he even welcomed them in his IG video. One tweet pointedly stated:
“WDYM ‘why we drinking with KPOP’? J Khaled personally invited these idols and even greeted them in the first clip of his IG video. If they were ‘nothing,’ would he do that? Looking down on K-pop idols in 2024 is still a thing?”
The K-pop fandom expressed their outrage on social media regarding Ricky Padilla’s alleged racist remarks, hoping that the boys did not receive any negative attention from other partygoers.
“It hurts to think that Vernon is probably the only one who fully understands the side-eye and attitude from certain guests, but he can’t say anything to Woozi or Mingyu because they’re having fun. We wanted them to have fun, not to be treated like they don’t belong,”- a fan reacted.
“Rather than your ‘disappointment’ or infantilizing the boys, there is a much more concerning issue here such as experiencing first-hand racism. It’s sad. It’s much more disappointing,”- another fan shared.
“And I hope nothing worse happened at that table, such as giving nasty looks to the boys or saying something nasty that the boys might have heard. I am so pissed,”- a fan mentioned.
Many fans were concerned that the radio personality could have chosen to leave the party if he felt uncomfortable around the K-pop idols. They expressed that such behaviors are why they prefer K-pop artists limit interactions with Western artists.
“He is obviously looking down on them. SEVENTEEN is way more popular and richer than him,”- a user reacted.
“This is why I don’t want to hype any interactions between K-pop idols & Western artists unless it’s confirmed that it was a good interaction,”- another user commented.
“Insecurity at its finest. He has the option to leave the party if he’s not fine partying with ‘K-pop.’ Why waste your time?”- a user mentioned.
