Dragon Ball Daima has embraced the opportunity to broaden the lore of the beloved series throughout its first nine episodes. The show delves into the enigmatic Demon Realm, spotlighting various characters who trace their origins back to this intriguing universe. Notably, it has been established that both Namekians and Glind, the race of character Shin, are native to this realm. While retcons are not new to the Dragon Ball franchise, the latest revelations significantly alter the backstory of one of its most iconic characters: Majin Buu.
Traditionally, Majin Buu was believed to have been forged by the wizard Bibidi and later controlled by Babidi following the Kais’ triumph over the malevolent wizard. However, Dragon Ball Daima has entirely rewritten this narrative by introducing the new detail that Buu was actually created by the Great Witch Marba. In the ninth episode, entitled “Thieves,”the enigmatic Dr. Arinsu, alongside Marba, conjures a fresh incarnation of Buu known as Majin Kuu.
Though this retcon may not drastically alter Buu’s role in the storyline, it undeniably raises intriguing questions regarding his creation. Some fans, including a notable user on X, Zero_skill0, have suggested the possibility of Frieza’s involvement based on striking similarities between the characters.
Connections Between Frieza and Majin Buu: A New Theory
A Shared Characteristic Among These Villains
Throughout its exploration of the Demon Realm, Dragon Ball Daima emphasizes that native demon races typically possess pointy ears. This distinguishing feature has been utilized to affirm the connections between Namekians, Glind, and the Demon Realm, also serving as a marker for various characters to recognize Goku as an outsider. Majin Kuu, with similarly pointed ears, contrasts sharply with Majin Buu, whose round ears are notably different.
Moreover, some fans speculate that Frieza, the notorious space tyrant, also possesses ears that resemble Buu’s rounded shape. In his return during the 2015 film Resurrection ‘F’, Frieza mentions being warned by his father, King Cold, to avoid both Beerus and Majin Buu.
Prior to his encounter with the Earthlings, the only beings cognizant of Buu’s existence included Beerus, the Kais, and select residents of the Demon Realm. Beerus’s knowledge likely stems from the aftermath of Buu’s attack on the Kais, which could have significant ramifications for the God of Destruction. The mention of Buu by King Cold introduces a compelling narrative thread, raising questions about how he acquired such knowledge, considering his non-demonic lineage.
The distinctive round ears on Buu may suggest that a member of Frieza’s race was part of the components involved in Majin Buu’s formation. While this connection could seem tenuous, it garners intrigue due to King Cold being the sole non-deity or Demon Realm entity familiar with Buu’s origins.
Beyond Buu and Frieza: More Characters Share This Trait
Additional Villains with Similar Ear Shapes
This shared characteristic of distinctly shaped ears is not just limited to Frieza and Buu; indeed, these ear traits can also be found in other prominent villains within the Dragon Ball Z universe. Perfect Cell shares this ear shape, marking a similarity among the primary antagonists of the era. Additionally, Jiren from Dragon Ball Super and Hit show variations of this ear structure. This connection becomes particularly noteworthy given Frieza’s acquired knowledge of Buu’s existence and the mystery surrounding its origination.
Despite the interesting concept of shared ear traits suggesting that Frieza and Buu could be potentially linked, there remains a distinct possibility that an inconsequential and unremarkable species contributed to Majin Buu’s creation. Though this alternative might lack the dramatic flair of Buu and Frieza’s potential familial ties, it remains a plausible theory within the expansive lore of Dragon Ball.
As Dragon Ball Daima forges ahead, it continues to reshape and redefine the existing lore of the franchise, with no signs of slowing down. Future episodes promise to delve even deeper into the lore of the Dragon Ball universe, and fans are sure to be captivated by the unfolding narrative.
