Final Fantasy 14 Mobile marks a significant entry in Square Enix’s gaming lineup, transforming the renowned MMO, Final Fantasy 14 Online, into a mobile format. This shift is somewhat unconventional, given that the developer typically refrains from launching iOS and Android versions of its flagship console titles. While mobile adaptations of past Final Fantasy games have existed—primarily as ports or remasters—the introduction of Final Fantasy 14 Mobile aims to deliver a fresh, standalone experience, echoing the style of Final Fantasy 15: Pocket Edition, rather than merely porting the original game.
Upon the announcement in November 2024 by Square Enix in collaboration with LightSpeed Studios, the official details were minimal. Initially, only a four-minute teaser trailer was released, showcasing in-game cinematics and commentary from developers, but lacking actual gameplay demonstrations. However, recent leaks of screenshots from closed beta tests provided an enticing glimpse into the game’s mechanics, revealing gameplay closely resembling that of FF14 Online, but with unique user interface (UI) enhancements that set it apart.
Should Final Fantasy 14 Online Adopt UI Features from Final Fantasy 14 Mobile?
Unique Ability Wheels: A Shift from Traditional Hotbars
The leaked screenshots from Final Fantasy 14 Mobile primarily focus on the game’s UI and menus, rather than combat or NPC interactions. This mobile version adopts much of the aesthetic and functional design from the original FF14; for instance, the layout includes a minimap situated in the upper right corner and health (HP) and magic (MP) bars along the bottom. A notable divergence, however, is the introduction of an ability wheel positioned in the lower right corner, replacing the traditional cross hotbars found in FF14 Online.
Cross hotbars serve as an integral part of Final Fantasy 14 Online, specifically designed to enhance the gameplay experience on controllers, particularly during combat. By allowing players quick access to their assigned skills, cross hotbars function as evolved shortcuts with a total of 128 potential skill slots across eight different hotbars. This system, while effective, requires players to navigate multiple button combinations, which can be cumbersome in the heat of battle.
Enhancing Controller Experience with Ability Wheels
Though cross hotbars facilitate a transition from traditional keyboard-and-mouse gameplay to console use, they can feel intricate and less intuitive. To select skills, players must engage in a series of button presses, involving combinations of LT or RT buttons (or L1 and R1 on PlayStation) along with corresponding D-pad or face buttons. While this approach provides depth, it can also complicate gameplay, reducing the overall accessibility of the experience.
In contrast, the ability wheel mechanic pioneered in Final Fantasy 14 Mobile appears to offer a more user-friendly method for skill selection on controllers. Players can swiftly choose a skill by holding down a button and manipulating the thumbstick, potentially streamlining the controller experience significantly. Therefore, it would be prudent for Square Enix to consider integrating this innovative control layout into the existing FF14 Online, particularly for current-generation consoles, to enhance player engagement and accessibility.
