Final Fantasy 14 Potentially Set for League of Legends Crossover, Says Square Enix Lead Developer

The expansive universe of Final Fantasy 14 may soon bridge with the captivating world of League of Legends, a possibility hinted at by the MMORPG’s lead developers. With the upcoming Dawntrail expansion, aspirations for a collaboration between Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends, and Square Enix are blossoming.

As highlighted by PCGamesN, Masaki Nakagawa, the lead battle content designer for FF14, eagerly spoke about his vision for a crossover during an interview with GamesRadar+. Explaining his personal experiences with League of Legends, Nakagawa outlined how incorporating characters from both games could become a realization of his gaming dreams.

As for other companies’ titles, I personally love League of Legends and have been playing the game for a long time, so a crossover with them would be a dream come true. It would be great fun if Aatrox and Aurelion Sol were featured as raid bosses in FF14. It might also be quite interesting to have FF14 characters implemented as crossover champions in League of Legends! If a Riot Games representative is reading this, it would be an honor if I could speak with you!

The recent Dawntrail expansion, released during the summer, has introduced several new features and elements to FF14. Screen Rant heralded this expansion as a “must-play,”praising its South American-inspired setting and lighter narrative tone, offering a refreshing change from previous intense expansions. Among its features is the Echoes of Vana’diel Raid, which pays homage to the classic MMORPG, Final Fantasy 11.

Both players and critics have lauded the new raid for its captivating challenges and exhilarating multi-boss encounters. Similarly, League of Legends is recognized for its innovative gameplay and diverse combat styles, making it a potentially suitable partner for FF14. As emphasized by Nakagawa, the champions from League of Legends could seamlessly transition into captivating raid bosses, fitting perfectly within the gameplay dynamics of prime raids like Echoes of Vana’diel.

Our Perspective: A League of Legends Crossover Is Viable

FF14’s History of Successful Crossovers

A Destiny 2 Guardian points their weapon on the left, Final Fantasy 14's Y'shtola poses in the middle, while a character from Fall Guys runs and cheers on the right.

In the same interview, Nakagawa revealed that the FF14 team has previously expressed interest in pursuing crossovers, particularly a collaboration with Final Fantasy 11, given that many developers on the FF14 team have fond memories of the original MMORPG. While a League of Legends crossover may present more complex challenges, it is not without precedent. FF14 has executed collaborations with other franchises, such as the party game Fall Guys, showcasing their potential for creative partnerships.

Though the differences between Fall Guys and League of Legends are significant, the success of crossovers indicates that collaboration beyond Square Enix’s titles is realistic. If an agreement can be reached between Square Enix and Riot Games, fans would undoubtedly relish the opportunity to experience what talented developers like Nakagawa could create. With both franchises enjoying immense popularity and robust gameplay mechanics, the synergy between them holds great promise.
