Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for Creature Commandos.
The recent sneak peek of Gotham from the DCU took me by surprise, stirring excitement for how this iconic city will be depicted in the upcoming The Brave and the Bold. If you haven’t been following Creature Commandos, you’re missing the opportunity to catch the first official project from the DCU and the key details that will enhance the live-action films. A prime example is episode 6, where the series reveals a fresh look at Gotham City within the DCU while delving into the backstory of one character.
As anticipation builds for the forthcoming Superman film and other exciting projects under James Gunn’s direction at DC Studios, there are pivotal characters, including Batman, who are yet to receive significant updates. Fortunately, Creature Commandos has offered us an unexpected glimpse into the rich potential awaiting fans when the Dark Knight makes his long-awaited return to the big screen.
The DCEU’s Gotham City: A Lack of Distinctive Style
A Focus on Gritty Realism Over Fantasy
Creating a captivating live-action superhero film presents a unique challenge often overlooked: designing a distinctive backdrop. Unlike animated series, which can experiment more freely with style and palette to craft a vibrant atmosphere, live-action adaptations frequently depict their fantastical heroes as if they occupy an ordinary world.
The iconic Batman films by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher in the ’80s and ’90s achieved success by immersing audiences in a stylized aesthetic that matched the comic’s tone. Unfortunately, the DCEU struggled to create a unique identity for Gotham or any major city, resulting in a less thrilling and engaging universe. It is crucial for the DCU to learn from these past missteps.
The DCU’s First Look at Gotham City Revives Batman’s Distinct Aesthetic
A Unique Vision for Batman’s Domain
If the portrayal of Gotham in Creature Commandos season 1, episode 6 serves as any indication, Batman’s world appears promising. The episode showcases a city infused with gothic elements, featuring a prominent gargoyle statue, a haunting green tint, and skyscrapers overshadowed by a thick fog. This drab yet atmospheric setting aligns perfectly with Gotham’s reputation as a hub of crime and corruption.

This reveal is promising for the DCU’s vision of Gotham. James Gunn has emphasized a connected universe, where animated narratives meet live-action storytelling. This suggests that the depiction we see in Creature Commandos provides a foundational idea of what Gotham will look like when Batman joins the DCU. Just as Matt Reeves’ The Batman successfully crafted a city where malevolence seemed ever-present, this dark approach captures the essence of Gotham, and I eagerly await its transition to live-action.
DC’s The Brave and the Bold Must Offer Gotham a Unique Identity
Gotham: A Character in Its Own Right
The recently released trailer for Superman suggests that the DCU’s Metropolis will depict a shining utopia, clean and safe. In contrast, Gotham serves as a stark opposite, embodying chaos and moral decay. The visual representation of these cities is just as integral to the narrative as the characters inhabiting them; thus, capturing Gotham’s essence is crucial. While Metropolis seems to be evolving positively, the insights into Gotham need to be refined and elaborated to elevate the DCU experience further.
Moreover, within the landscapes of superheroes and villains, cities must embody more than mundane urbanity—they need to reflect the extraordinary nature of their inhabitants. The DCU must ensure that the fantasy is palpable in this vibrant realm it’s establishing. Although Batman may lack traditional superpowers, he operates in a universe where extraordinary beings exist, making it essential for Gotham to resonate with an extraordinary quality as well. Based on the first glimpses from Creature Commandos, I am optimistic about what lies ahead for The Brave and the Bold.
