Recently, Lara Croft has regained attention following the release of the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Conversations are buzzing about potential candidates for the character’s role in Amazon’s live-action adaptation of the beloved video game franchise.
The last cinematic portrayal of Tomb Raider was the 2018 film starring Alicia Vikander, which, unfortunately, did not perform well enough at the box office to secure a sequel. There were discussions regarding a follow-up film featuring Vikander, but those plans never materialized. In May 2024, Amazon announced the development of a new live-action series as part of their collaboration with game developer Crystal Dynamics. This series will be tied to the Tomb Raider video game series created by Crystal Dynamics, which includes titles such as Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018), and a forthcoming untitled game currently in production.
The Search for a New Lara Croft Actress Intensifies
Amazon’s Tomb Raider series is being scripted and produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is acclaimed for her creations like Fleabag and Killing Eve, and her performances in films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. As fans eagerly await the announcement of the new actress chosen to portray the iconic Lara Croft, they may recall that Hayley Atwell recently voiced the character in the Netflix animated version. During the upfront presentations in May, studio head Jennifer Salke emphasized that the casting will involve an extensive global search.
According to a report from Deadline, actress Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton are among those being considered for the pivotal role of Lara Croft. Turner is best recognized for her portrayal of Sansa Stark throughout all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and had significant roles as a young Jean Grey in Fox’s X-Men prequels. On the other hand, Boynton has starred in Netflix series such as Gypsy and The Politician, along with notable films like Bohemian Rhapsody, The Greatest Hits, and Barbie. Although no additional names have been disclosed, it seems Amazon is inclined towards casting a British actress, aligning with the character’s legendary origins.
Little is known about the storyline or vision for Amazon’s Tomb Raider series, but Waller-Bridge noted earlier this year that the franchise has been a significant presence in her life, indicating that the character of Lara Croft holds deep personal significance for her. With the casting process now underway, news about the new Lara Croft actress might be just around the corner, hinting that the series scripts are likely completed and that production could commence soon.
Crystal Dynamics has yet to announce the release schedule for the next Tomb Raider video game, while Netflix is busy producing the second season of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. At this stage, with multiple Tomb Raider projects in the pipeline, it remains uncertain which will premiere first.
