Gareth Edwards’ Overlooked Sci-Fi Movie Achieves Streaming Popularity After Two Years

Gareth Edwards has once again captured the spotlight, this time through remarkable streaming success for his sci-fi film, The Creator, released two years ago. Edwards, a British filmmaker, first made his mark with the 2010 independent horror flick, Monsters, which he crafted on a modest budget of just $500,000, showcasing his talents as a director, cinematographer, production designer, and visual effects artist. He went on to helm the ambitious Godzilla in 2014, marking his entry into the prestigious world of big-budget blockbuster filmmaking and launching Legendary’s successful Monsterverse franchise.

Following that, Edwards was tasked with directing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Despite facing a tumultuous production phase, where extensive reshoots were overseen by co-writer Tony Gilroy, Edwards managed to deliver a film that has become a beloved addition to the Star Wars saga. After this project, there was a significant gap in Edwards’ directorial output—lasting seven years—until the release of his original sci-fi epic, The Creator, in 2023. Looking ahead, he is set to expand his filmography further by directing the forthcoming film Jurassic World: Rebirth, scheduled for release on July 2, 2025.
