Tributes Pour In for Victims of Jeju Air Crash in South Korea
In the aftermath of one of the most catastrophic aviation disasters in recent South Korean history, celebrities from across the nation have come forth to express their heartfelt condolences to the victims of the Jeju Air crash. This tragic event, which took place on December 29, resulted in the loss of 179 lives out of the 181 passengers aboard the flight, leaving only two survivors.
Details of the Tragedy
The Boeing 747 encountered dire circumstances while landing at Muan International Airport, ultimately skidding down the runway and crashing into a perimeter fence, which ignited a large fire upon impact. In response to this calamity, Acting President Choi Sang-mok has declared Muan County a special disaster area and instituted a period of national mourning that extends until January 4.
Celebrities Reflect on Loss
Among those honoring the victims is G-Dragon, a prominent member of the popular K-Pop group Big Bang. He took to Instagram to share a heartfelt tribute, posting an image of condolence flowers to remember the deceased.
In a show of respect, singer Kim Jang Hoon announced the cancellation of his upcoming concert in Suncheon, South Jeolla. He acknowledged the difficulties this decision posed for performers and event organizers, expressing gratitude towards the organizing team for their understanding despite the financial repercussions.
“It is not easy for the performer and the organizers to call off concerts or events like this,”Kim wrote in a social media post on Monday. “I thank the organizers for complying with my requests despite the expected financial damage and complaints from the customers.”
A Call to Compassion
Red Velvet’s Wendy also shared her sentiments on the December 30 broadcast of SBS Power FM’s show, Wendy’s Youngstreet. She emphasized the importance of comfort and heartfelt gestures during such challenging times.
“When we think of, comfort, and take care of the people around us, we call it ‘caring for them,’”she remarked. “Now is the time when we must use our hearts without holding back. If we use our whole heart to comfort people who are difficult to express in words, our sincerity will reach them.”
Tributes from Young Artists
The girl group Jeanz, previously known as NewJeans, also paid their respects while attending the 66th Shining! Japan Record Awards. They donned black ribbons on their outfits as a poignant tribute to the victims.
In their tribute, the group succinctly stated, “In sincere condolences,”reflecting the sentiments echoed throughout the entertainment industry.
