Key Highlights from The Witcher 4 Announcement
- Protagonist Shift: Players will control Ciri, marking a significant change in gameplay focus.
- Geralt’s Continued Presence: Geralt of Rivia is set to appear in a supporting role, maintaining ties to the series’ rich history.
- New Era for the Franchise: Ciri’s central role suggests the beginning of a transformative chapter for the Witcher series.
The Witcher 4 is taking a bold step by placing Geralt of Rivia in a secondary role while allowing his adopted daughter, Ciri, to take center stage. Although players will primarily experience the game through Ciri’s perspective, Geralt is expected to make appearances, albeit in a less prominent capacity.
During a revealing six-minute cinematic trailer unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, CD Projekt Red confirmed Ciri as the protagonist. The trailer illustrates Ciri’s evolution into a formidable monster-slayer and a beacon of justice. However, the opening narration hints at a proud father reflecting on his daughter’s journey, creating a tantalizing sense of mystery surrounding Geralt’s involvement through the new father-daughter narrative.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba reassured fans in an interview with PC Gamer that while Ciri is the focal point of the narrative, Geralt will not be entirely absent. He mentioned that Ciri’s storyline will stretch across a planned trilogy, hinting at future developments while maintaining Geralt’s legacy. “I can’t tell you more, but I think the promise is enough,”Kalemba expressed, easing concerns about Geralt’s significance in the franchise’s future.
Geralt’s Role in The Witcher 4
The decision to have Ciri lead The Witcher 4 reflects CD Projekt Red’s long-term vision, with plans for Ciri’s character development stretching back over a decade. Previously, in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players got a taste of Ciri’s abilities, which include unique powers such as high-level magic and leadership skills—features that set her apart from Geralt and pave the way for a new gaming experience.
As she steps into this fresh narrative, Kalemba explained that this evolution is a “natural path for her to prove herself,”suggesting players will embark on a captivating journey alongside Ciri. This pivot in focus signifies not only character growth but also an expansion of the thematic elements that define the Witcher universe.
Ciri’s prominent role also clarifies narrative choices from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, where players encountered multiple branching endings that shaped the fates of Ciri and Geralt. High-stakes scenarios included Ciri’s potential demise or her rise as Empress of Nilfgaard. Recent previews suggest a deviation from these outcomes, opening the door to a storyline where Ciri fakes her death and chooses to carve out a new identity as a Witcher, diverging from her past while maintaining the series’ core themes.
