Glen Powell Cast as Villain in Edgar Wright’s ‘The Running Man’ Production

The anticipation surrounding Edgar Wright’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “The Running Man”continues to build with each update. Glen Powell will portray the role of Ben Richards, a man driven by desperation to rescue his family, and he now has a formidable antagonist to contend with.

Originally a 1987 film featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the previous “The Running Man”diverged significantly from King’s original narrative. However, with Wright at the helm, many fans are hopeful that this new adaptation could finally deliver the faithful retelling they’ve been waiting for. During a panel at New York Comic Con, moderated by Collider’s Steve Weintraub, it was revealed that Josh Brolin will join the impressive cast Wright has assembled.

The storyline follows Ben Richards, who participates in a brutal game show in a desperate attempt to finance treatment for his ailing daughter. He finds himself in “The Running Man,”where survival becomes a battle, ultimately deciding to expose the dark truths of the show to the public. Brolin is cast as one of the show’s producers. Additionally, it was confirmed that Powell’s co-star from “Twisters,”Katy O’Brian, will join the ensemble as another contestant, alongside Daniel Ezra and Karl Glusman.

As I dive into “The Running Man,”I’m completely captivated by the story. Attending New York Comic Con and not being able to fully engage with the book has been challenging, especially after learning about Brolin’s casting while holding the novel at the event.

Beyond the casting announcements, details regarding Wright’s adaptation remain scarce. He collaborated with Michael Bacall on the screenplay. And just to throw it out there, Edgar Wright, I’m totally available for the role of Sheila should you need someone!

This film is gearing up to be something extraordinary

There’s much about this film that resonates with me. While the thought of Powell in this role excites me, as an admirer of Wright’s previous works, I am thrilled to see him take on a Stephen King adaptation. This particular story retains its relevance as part of King’s oeuvre.

Set initially in 2025, the original novel highlights a stark divide between the wealthy elite and the struggling poor, which unfortunately still rings true today. It remains uncertain if Wright and Bacall will choose to set their film in 2025 or perhaps another futuristic timeline.

What matters most is my excitement for this project. The specifics of what has yet to be revealed don’t diminish my enthusiasm, nor do I care if this adaptation strays from a faithful reading of the novel. Honestly, even if the film were simply a recording of the cast reading the book with little embellishment, I would still be filled with anticipation. My investment in this movie is that strong.

With every new revelation about “The Running Man,”my eagerness to see it escalates, especially now that we have the thrilling prospect of a Brolin/Powell showdown. I am all in.
