Grimes and aespa Discuss AI and Technology in Music Videos

On October 24, 2023, Rolling Stone published an exclusive interview with Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes and the K-pop group aespa. During this enlightening conversation, they discussed the integration of Artificial Intelligence, avatars, and various innovative elements within their music videos.

Throughout the exchange, Grimes praised aespa and noted her admiration for the visuals in their projects. She mentioned the innovative aspects they have employed, noting similarities between her work and aespa’s creations, particularly in the realms of avatars and digital media. As translated by X user @saLtyandsweet, she remarked:

“I think it’s kind of beautiful. I feel like limitations are really good in art, and you guys made great use of that limitation. Live music is nice, but there’s a lot of innovation that can happen in the music video. Especially because it’s so short-form in some ways.”

In response, aespa member Giselle expressed her gratitude towards Grimes, revealing that the band learned about her through their photographer and co-creative director, Brian. While filming their track Next Level, they had discussions about Grimes, and Brian shared her music with them.

Giselle also mentioned that her bandmate Ningning had long been a fan of Grimes and shared their excitement during the recording:

“And so they played your music while we were filming, and so we’re like, ‘Oh, my God, is this Grimes?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, she knows you too.’ And we’re like, ‘really?’ And then it kind of ended there, and we’re, like, we’ve always had this interest in you. And especially Ningning, like really loves your music as well.”

In other news, aespa released its first Japanese single, Hot Mess, on July 3, 2024, through SM Entertainment and Warner Music Japan.
