The leaked data includes insights about a canceled project that could have served as GTA Online’s spiritual predecessor. Reportedly, these documents were shared as a protest against an individual known as “john doe,”accused of purchasing and then reselling stolen Rockstar content at inflated prices. Originally uploaded to the digital media archive on December 17, 2024, the documents gained traction only recently. Notably, former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij recognized several elements of the leaks, verifying their legitimacy through social media.

Insights from Leaked GTA Files on Cancelled Projects

Notably, the latest revelations indicate that Rockstar Games had intentions to develop an online multiplayer component for the Grand Theft Auto series as early as May 2001. A detailed 58-page design document titled “GTA: Online”elaborates on expected features, including character customization, development paths, and mission gameplay. Furthermore, it suggests that Barking Dog Studios, which later rebranded as Rockstar Vancouver, was involved in crafting early designs for this online concept, although further development was ultimately not authorized.

The leak also discloses interesting tidbits, including plans for eight romantic interests in *San Andreas*, exceeding the final count in the released version. Additional documents provide early blueprints for map designs and missions for *Vice City Stories*, along with notes indicating enhancements contemplated for *GTA Advance*.
