On September 17, 2024, GTA Online received a significant update on PC, introducing the essential anti-cheat software, BattlEye. This update aims to enhance security by ensuring all online lobbies on PC are fortified against cheaters, providing a more enjoyable multiplayer experience. Unfortunately, this new addition has led to several limitations and issues.
Rockstar Game Support has announced that due to the integration of BattlEye, GTA Online has become unplayable on Steam Deck. Read on for details about the current status of this popular handheld gaming device.
GTA Online on Steam Deck is now unplayable after the BattlEye Anti-Cheat update, Rockstar directs users to Valve
As illustrated in the screenshot above, Rockstar Games Support acknowledges that the BattlEye Anti-Cheat integration has rendered GTA Online unplayable on the Steam Deck. They further noted:
“GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck, and all technical support inquiries should be directed to Valve’s Steam Deck support content and community.”
Tech enthusiast Timo Schmidt expressed frustration over this limitation by reposting a message from BattlEye’s account dated September 25, 2021, where the company asserted its commitment to providing native support for Mac and Linux. It seems that the unplayability of Grand Theft Auto Online on Steam Deck is a decision rooted in Rockstar Games rather than BattlEye.
In a support bulletin released today, Rockstar Games has outlined some known issues on PC related to the BattlEye Anti-Cheat implementation in Grand Theft Auto Online. The company highlighted that the software may conflict with the following mods or graphics enhancement tools:
- ReShade
- Special_K
While players are still able to launch the game following the update, these mods will be deactivated during gameplay.
Moreover, the anti-cheat software is reported to encounter issues if users have the following antivirus applications installed on their PCs:
- AVG
- Trend Micro
PC gamers are advised to temporarily disable these antivirus programs before starting Grand Theft Auto Online after the BattlEye Anti-Cheat update.
As of now, there is no information on when the Steam Deck version of this widely appreciated multiplayer title will be playable again.
