Gwent Confirmed for The Witcher 4 by CDPR: What You Need to Know

CD Projekt Red, the acclaimed developer behind The Witcher series, has officially announced that the beloved card game Gwent will feature prominently in the upcoming The Witcher 4. This fan-favorite side game first appeared in 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, allowing players to engage in card battles with various NPCs scattered throughout the expansive game world.

During a post-The Game Awards 2024 interview with Easy Allies, Game Director Sebastian Kalemba and Executive Producer Gosia Mitręga confirmed Gwent’s inclusion in the game led by Ciri. Mitręga expressed her enthusiasm for Gwent’s return, stating:

“We love it right, so I guess this is our question! We really love [Gwent] and we also really carefully always listen to the community – which we love, and it’s an amazing [community]. […]
I don’t think anyone will be disappointed
. “

Kalemba further affirmed the game’s importance, saying, “For sure, it’s a part of the experience, right? So absolutely.”

While Gwent is an optional activity in The Witcher 3, its popularity soared, leading to the creation of a standalone version, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, available in both digital and physical formats. The standalone game has garnered an impressive reputation on platforms like Steam, with over 26,000 reviews marking it as “Very Positive”since its launch in 2020.

Given Gwent’s success, it would have been surprising if CDPR decided to exclude it from the new Witcher installment. However, with the game launching a brand-new saga separate from Geralt’s story, there was a lingering concern about whether Gwent would make the cut, particularly since the main character this time around is Ciri – who may not share Geralt’s passion for the game. CDPR’s confirmation of Gwent’s presence is a sigh of relief for fans.

The inclusion of Gwent in The Witcher 4 is a brilliant tactical choice by CD Projekt Red. This mini-game has transcended mere gameplay; it has evolved into a cherished element of The Witcher experience, recognized for its strategic depth and seamless integration into the overall narrative. Engaging in deep matches can also provide players with valuable rewards, making it not just a pastime but a tactical advantage.

While specifics regarding Gwent’s evolution in The Witcher 4 remain under wraps, CD Projekt Red has assured fans of their satisfaction with the card game’s adaptation. If the developers can modernize the original system while maintaining its charm, players can expect an exciting iteration of Gwent, even though it may be some time before its full particulars are unveiled.
