WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the second season of Squid Game.
In the eagerly awaited second season of Squid Game, Gyeong-seok’s daughter, Na-yeon, emerges as an essential background figure. The initial three episodes feature Gi-hun reprising his role as Player 456, who seeks revenge on the Front Man. Meanwhile, we’re introduced to Gyeong-seok, portrayed by Lee Jin-wook, who competes as Player 246 in the latest iteration of this deadly game.
Gyeong-seok enters the Squid Game primarily motivated by financial necessity—he needs to cover the exorbitant medical expenses for his daughter Na-yeon’s treatment following her diagnosis of blood cancer. Once an artist, Gyeong-seok finds himself desperate in the face of escalating medical costs, a scenario that resonates with many characters in this intense narrative, where financial desperation drives them to risk their lives in treacherous games.
Na-yeon Is Now Orphaned Following Gyeong-seok’s Tragic Fate
Na-yeon Sacrifices Herself to Aid Gi-hun
The plot takes a gut-wrenching turn in episode 7, titled “Chingu-inga Jeog-inga,”where Gyeong-seok is brutally shot during a revolt among the Players. His death leaves Na-yeon bereft and devoid of familial support just when she needs it most—raising the grim prospect that she has no resources available for her ongoing battle with cancer. In a heart-wrenching act, Na-yeon meets her end while bravely assisting Gi-hun in his efforts to regain control from within the Squid Game.
The circumstances surrounding Gyeong-seok’s demise add a layer of horror to the narrative. After exhausting his ammunition, he desperately pleads with the Pink Guards for mercy, hoping to return to safety. His pleas fall on deaf ears, and he is shot, leaving viewers questioning the identity of his killer. There’s lingering speculation that No-eul might be responsible for Gyeong-seok’s death. Although he is seemingly dead, a glimmer of hope remains that Gyeong-seok may yet survive, paving the way for a potential return in a future season.
No-eul May Step In to Protect Na-yeon Following Her Father’s Death
A Brief Encounter Between Two Characters
No-eul is portrayed as one of the more enigmatic and complex characters introduced in the second season. Notably, her brief interaction with Na-yeon at a carnival sees her present the young girl with a lollipop. In return, Na-yeon gifts No-eul a drawing of the two, showcasing her innocence and hope. If Gyeong-seok’s demise is confirmed, it’s plausible that No-eul might take an interest in Na-yeon’s welfare, akin to how Gi-hun looks out for Cheol, Sae-byeok’s brother. This potential new dynamic adds an intriguing layer to the unfolding drama in Squid Game.
