Harrison Ford Discovers He’s a Men’s Fashion Inspiration and His Response is Priceless

My admiration for Harrison Ford knows no bounds, particularly the iconic versions of him from the 70s and 80s. His unique sense of style is something I wish men would revive today. Thus, it was only a matter of time before someone asked Ford about his fashionable past.

In an insightful profile by Gabriella Paiella for GQ, conducted ahead of the second season of Shrinking, Ford was questioned about his fashion at the Cannes Film Festival in the 1980s. The photograph from that event has since become a timeless reference point in men’s fashion, with many trying to emulate Ford’s distinctive style. Paiella inquired whether Ford realized the enduring appeal of that particular image.

“Since this is GQ, I feel compelled to ask you a style question. There’s a famous photo of you at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival, in which you’re donned in blue shorts and a blue sweater. This snapshot has become an iconic source of inspiration for men’s fashion enthusiasts. Were you aware of this?”

Ford’s reaction was characteristically entertaining: “I think I’m going to be ill.” He then candidly admitted to being aware of the photo, and when asked if he was fond of it, Ford quipped, “I’ve grown out of it.” For me, there is a particular photo of Harrison Ford that encapsulates the essence of men’s fashion. Knowing that Ford acknowledges at least some legacy of his past images brings me a sense of joy.

Moreover, this highlights the significant influence he still holds over fashion trends. Even today, many men draw inspiration from Ford’s looks from the 70s and 80s.

Men continue to channel his style.

I tend to reference my favorite actors frequently, but when I’m onto something…it feels validated. Contemporary actors like Chris Pine and Glen Powell radiate that signature Harrison Ford energy. I even pointed out online that Powell’s promotional outfits for Twisters brought to mind Ford’s iconic style. Powell’s stylist Warren Alfie Baker, spoke to GQ about how they aimed to capture the essence of Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, and Bill Paxton for the press events. So, naturally, I feel justified in my perspective.

Chris Pine has previously acknowledged his admiration for Ford, which consistently aligns with my observations regarding modern actors influenced by Ford’s style.

I have always championed this view.

Back in his heyday, Ford consistently set the standard for stylishness while showcasing his films. Anything he wore resonated with audiences. It’s amusing to see his reaction to that specific photo becoming a benchmark for fashion inspiration. I genuinely hope actors continue incorporating 70s and 80s styles into their outfits, and if they decide to recreate the charm of Harrison Ford’s looks, I would wholeheartedly support it.
