The casting process for the much-anticipated HBO Max Harry Potter series is progressing. While searches for the iconic trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue, emerging reports indicate that the showrunners are keen on Mark Rylance for the pivotal role of Dumbledore. This iconic character is set for a recasting for the second time in the context of this streaming series.

According to a report from Variety, discussions are underway with Mark Rylance. Although an official offer has yet to be extended, Warner Bros. is actively assessing Rylance’s interest and potential availability. An esteemed UK actor, Rylance won an Academy Award for his role in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies and has also triumphed on Broadway, earning three Tony Awards. His diverse portfolio includes appearances in genre films like Ready Player One.

The potential casting of Rylance aligns with Warner Bros.’ strategic pivot towards establishing key franchises. The company has now committed to focusing on four major properties moving forward: Mortal Kombat, Batman, Harry Potter—with plans for a sequel, Hogwarts Legacy 2—and Game of Thrones. In an effort to create synergy, there are discussions about interconnecting the video game with the upcoming series. This could suggest that Rylance might also lend his voice to characters in the game, should he secure the Dumbledore role.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Rylance’s involvement, there remains no formal agreement or offer at this juncture.

This year, Warner Bros. issued a casting call for the show’s leading roles, identifying candidates for Harry, Ron, and Hermione, echoing their original casting approach for the movie series. With applications now closed as of October 31, the project seems to be progressing to the next stage of casting.

If Mark Rylance ultimately receives and accepts the role of Dumbledore, he would become the fifth actor to portray this legendary character. The role was first brought to life by Richard Harris, who sadly passed in 2002, leading to Michael Gambon’s takeover starting with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Additionally, Toby Regbo portrayed a younger Dumbledore in flashback scenes, while Jude Law represented the character in the prequel films Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
