As excitement builds around the gaming landscape, enthusiasts of Helldivers 2 are left pondering the future of Arrowhead Game Studios. CCO Johan Pilestedt recently provided intriguing hints about potential new projects. Alongside these updates, he also addressed previously shelved ideas, offering a glimpse into the studio’s creative explorations beyond their current title.
Launched at the beginning of 2024, Helldivers 2 is widely regarded as one of the year’s standout games. It successfully combines engaging combat suited for fans of third-person shooters with a strong emphasis on teamwork and communication. This synergy has fostered a vibrant and loyal gaming community—one that is not hesitant to express their opinions on decisions made by Arrowhead. Recently, Pilestedt opened up about the studio’s ambitions and several projects that, while never fully realized, showcase the studio’s innovative spirit.
In a conversation on Twitter, Pilestedt revealed that work on the studio’s next game is already underway. Importantly, he seeks feedback from the gaming community, encouraging fans to share their ideas for future titles. This dialogue occurred just before midnight on December 31, 2024, and resulted in an enthusiastic response from players. One fan proposed an on-rails flight game inspired by Star Fox. To the surprise of many, Pilestedt disclosed that Arrowhead had previously explored a project dubbed “Eagles of Democracy,”which closely aligned with this suggestion, although it ultimately did not reach the development stage. Accompanying this revelation were images of the concept, offering a tantalizing preview of what could have been.

Further elaborating to another fan query, Pilestedt acknowledged that Arrowhead had once dabbled in reimagining the classic 1990s twin-stick shooter Smash TV. The planned project was envisioned as a modern, top-down interpretation of the iconic arcade game. Notably, the original Helldivers also featured top-down gameplay, contrasting significantly with the mechanics introduced in Helldivers 2.
While it remains unclear why these intriguing concepts were never developed, Pilestedt’s candor about abandoned projects is refreshing. In the meantime, Arrowhead Game Studios continues to focus its efforts on supporting Helldivers 2. The game recently received its most ambitious update, Omens of Tyranny, which launched in December and introduced new weapons and armor inspired by the Killzone series. Looking ahead to 2025, players can anticipate a steady flow of updates, including expanded customization options, new enemy types, and additional environments.
