Superman has faced a myriad of formidable villains throughout cinematic history, leaving behind a collection of memorable quotes from these foes. Across various mediums—be it extraterrestrial adversaries or villains hailing from Earth—Superman’s challenges have been diverse and captivating. Among these adversaries, Lex Luthor stands out as the most frequently portrayed, yet it’s equally essential to acknowledge some of Superman’s mightiest opponents who have ventured into the DCEU.

Zod, Doomsday, and Darkseid: A Triumvirate of Threats
In a promotional interview with JOE.ie ahead of the release of Justice League, Henry Cavill shared his top DC comic book movie villains. He identified Zod and Doomsday as standout choices, praising their significance in Dan Jurgens’ comics. His list also included Brainiac and Darkseid, highlighting that three of these formidable characters made their mark in the DCEU, with Brainiac being the lone exception not to face Cavill’s Superman.
Superman confronted Zod in Man of Steel and went up against Doomsday in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Although he did not engage Darkseid directly in either Justice League or Zack Snyder’s Justice League, he made an impact by defeating Steppenwolf as a clear warning to other threats. While it would have been thrilling to see a clash with Brainiac, achieving battles with three out of four is a commendable feat.

Brainiac’s anticipated role in Man of Steel 2 never came to fruition. This character remains one of the most significant villains missing from Superman’s live-action adaptations. Despite his long-standing rivalry with Superman in comics, he hasn’t appeared on the big screen. Although there have been rumors regarding potential future films featuring Brainiac, including a written script for Man of Steel 2 starring him as the central antagonist, the film never moved into production.
Regrettably, Warner Bros. opted to advance with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice rather than pursue a direct sequel to Man of Steel, a decision aimed at rapidly expanding their cinematic universe. This choice elicited mixed reactions from audiences, with many praising the Ultimate Edition’s alternate cut. Overall, the absence of a continuous storyline for Cavill’s Superman prevented a proper showdown with Brainiac. However, recent confirmations hint that Brainiac might finally be making a long-awaited onscreen appearance.

Throughout the DCEU, Superman has only headlined a single solo film; however, his presence has been pivotal in shaping the entire universe. Under Zack Snyder’s direction, the narrative expanded to include Batman and the Justice League, all while orbiting around Superman and the foundation laid in Man of Steel. The central conflict of Batman v Superman revolved primarily around the implications of Superman’s existence, while Justice League focused heavily on his resurrection.
It is my view that Zack Snyder’s suite of films could be interpreted as a Superman trilogy. This approach invited a range of Superman-centric characters and plots, firmly establishing the character’s significance within the broader narrative. Even with minimal appearances, the overarching storyline remained closely tied to Superman’s legacy, necessitating the inclusion of his classic adversaries such as Lex Luthor and Doomsday.
As we enter a new era with James Gunn steering the DC Universe, I can’t help but feel both excitement and nostalgia for the DCEU’s past. Imagining Henry Cavill confronting Brainiac would have been a thrilling experience, yet I am grateful for the portrayal Cavill delivered as Superman. Ultimately, what matters most for DC is that Superman is at the forefront of its cinematic journey. I am hopeful that the forthcoming Superman film will embody the depth, heart, and complexity reminiscent of Superman’s legacy in the DCEU, as it sets into motion the new DCU next year.
