Henry Cavill’s Upcoming Franchises: Even Greater Opportunities Than Superman and Geralt

Henry Cavill is set to embark on an exciting new chapter in his career, stepping away from his iconic roles as Superman and Geralt of Rivia. With three promising franchises on his horizon, Cavill’s future projects may offer even more creative opportunities and artistic fulfillment than his previous roles. His acting journey commenced in 2001 with the film Laguna, and after showcasing his talent in productions like Red Riding Hood, Stardust, and Immortals, alongside the acclaimed series The Tudors, he achieved major success in 2013 as Superman in Man of Steel.

Although he gained immense popularity within the superhero genre, his venture into fantasy began with the Netflix series The Witcher, where he portrayed Geralt of Rivia for the show’s first three seasons. After a brief cameo in 2023’s The Flash, Cavill made the significant decision to leave the DC Universe and pass the mantle of Geralt to Liam Hemsworth. However, he is now poised to embrace three new, potentially more rewarding franchises that may redefine his legacy.

Stepping away from the roles of Superman and Geralt hasn’t hindered Cavill. Instead, it has opened doors to three major franchises: Highlander, Voltron, and Warhammer. In 2021, Cavill was officially confirmed for the reboot of the iconic fantasy adventure film Highlander, which originally premiered in 1986. This reboot centers around Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century immortal, and promises to delve into the complexities of its legendary characters, all under the direction of Chad Stahelski.

Following the anticipation surrounding Highlander, Cavill is also set to star in Voltron, a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series. The project, which has seen its fair share of development hurdles since 2005, has gained renewed momentum since its active revival in 2022, with Cavill’s involvement announced in early 2024 in an undisclosed role alongside a diverse cast including Sterling K. Brown and Rita Ora.

The significant acquisition of the Warhammer 40,000 franchise by Amazon Studios has further solidified Cavill’s place in these upcoming projects. After becoming attached to the project as both an executive producer and star in December 2022, Cavill announced in December 2024 that an agreement was reached with Amazon and Games Workshop, paving the way for the long-awaited project to finally move forward.

While Cavill’s portrayals of Superman and Geralt of Rivia garnered much acclaim, his future appears even more promising through the exploration of these three new franchises. The complexity of the Superman character often invites scrutiny and debate, reflecting a broader controversy tied to interpretations of the character across various iterations of the DCEU. While Cavill’s performance was met with praise, inconsistent scriptwriting presented significant challenges throughout the franchise.

Similarly, adapting a rich universe like The Witcher comes with its own complexities. Although fans largely embraced Cavill’s interpretation of Geralt, the adaptation faced its own share of criticisms. In contrast, Cavill’s upcoming roles in Highlander, Voltron, and Warhammer present a unique chance for him to exhibit greater versatility without being overshadowed by the established legacies of his previous characters.

These franchises, while carrying their dedicated fanbases and expectations, also offer Cavill the freedom to explore new dimensions in his acting craft. By moving forward with Henry Cavill, audiences can anticipate performances that are not only entertaining but also rich with depth and authenticity, showcasing a side of him that may have been restrained by the weight of previous roles.
