Warning: this article contains spoilers for Rescue: HI-Surf season 1, episode 9.
Midseason Plot Twist Undermines Character Development
In a surprising midseason twist, Rescue: HI-Surf reunites characters Emily “Em” Wright and Will Ready, potentially stunting their character growth. This new Fox series, available for streaming on Hulu, centers around professional lifeguards in the stunning locale of O’ahu, Hawaii. Enhanced by intricate relationship dynamics, the show draws comparisons to the iconic Baywatch, particularly through a romance that feels cryptic and ultimately unfulfilling.
Throughout the season, hints of a troubled past between Em and Will emerge, as their relationship escalates amidst other romantic interests, including Will’s engagement. However, the show struggles to convincingly depict their infidelity, culminating in a passionate yet unmerited kiss in episode 8, “Drop In.”The fleeting jealousy displayed by Will fails to build sufficient emotional resonance, and Em’s abrupt revelation about “missing their chance”lacks context, leaving viewers disenchanted with the character development.
Will and Em’s Affair Undermines Their Development
One Step Forward, Five Steps Back
At the series’ outset, Will emerges as a character eager to escape the North Shore, even teasingly contemplating a firefighter position to distance himself from Em. His rejection of the offer and Em’s new relationship with Sean Harimoto, a firefighter, initially suggest a mature and professional dynamic between the two lifeguards. Will’s encouragement for Em to be transparent with Sean about her feelings exhibits growth; however, this maturity dissipates when they choose to cheat, disregarding their partners for a momentary thrill.
The show portrays Will’s fiancée, Julie, almost as an antagonist due to her hesitance to include Em in their wedding plans. Yet, it’s Will’s wavering loyalty and unresolved feelings for Em that create Julie’s legitimate insecurities. This emotional tug-of-war only degenerates their relationships further as both Will and Em make hollow reassurances about having moved on, while their actions tell a different story.
Their Relationship Is Doomed from the Start
Factors Sabotaging Their Affair
While some TV couples find their dynamic faltering post-reunion, Em and Will never truly possessed chemistry to begin with. Their interactions mainly revolve around awkward tension and petty workplace conflicts, which the show attempts to transition into a romantic storyline without adequate buildup. Their affair appears less about genuine connection and more about seeking superficial closure. Complications arise as Sean’s devotion amplifies Will’s insecurities, and Julie’s mounting disdain pressures Em, creating a foundation primed for self-sabotage.
As seen in episode 9 (“The Aftermath”), the ramifications of their choices loom large. Will has yet to cancel his wedding, while Sean remains seriously invested in Em. Laka, a colleague, becomes aware of their indiscretion and holds off on revealing it until provoked, indicating the unsustainability of their secret. Ultimately, it’s clear that Will and Em are bound for criticism in Rescue: HI-Surf.
Rescue: HI-Surf returns on Monday, January 20, on Fox.
