Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to unveil the legendary character of Hikaru Sulu, who would make an excellent counterpart to Lt. Erica Ortegas (played by Melissa Navia). Serving as a prequel to the original series, Strange New Worlds has successfully introduced refreshed versions of beloved figures while also showcasing new characters. Notable additions to the crew include Celia Rose Gooding’s Lt. Nyota Uhura and Christina Chong’s Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh, indicating the series’ commitment to diverse and engaging casting.
Although several icons from Star Trek: The Original Series have made their way into Strange New Worlds, prominent figures like Lt. Hikaru Sulu have yet to make an appearance. Sulu, famously portrayed by George Takei, was integral to Captain James T. Kirk’s (William Shatner) crew on the Starship Enterprise, primarily recognized for his exceptional piloting skills. Although he began as a physicist in science division blue, Sulu transitioned to the role of helmsman, donning command gold. His absence from the current series presents a unique opportunity for storyline development, particularly in establishing a rivalry with Lt. Ortegas, the pilot of Pike’s USS Enterprise.
The Ideal Rivalry: Sulu vs. Ortegas
Dynamic Pilots: A Compelling Competition
Throughout his journey in the Star Trek universe, Sulu has exhibited remarkable versatility, predominantly recognized for his prowess as a pilot. With a flair for adventure and a competitive spirit, a clash with Ortegas could showcase his dynamic personality. As one of Starfleet’s top pilots, Ortegas embodies the thrill of executing challenging flight maneuvers, a characteristic that may push both characters to their limits. The introduction of Sulu could also facilitate further character exploration for Ortegas, who, despite her talents, has not yet received extensive character development.
The potential for friendly competition between Sulu and Ortegas promises not only to be entertaining but to add depth to both characters. Sulu’s illustrious career spans from his time on the USS Enterprise to commanding the USS Excelsior, making him one of Star Trek’s most distinguished characters. However, many details of his life before joining Captain Kirk’s crew remain undisclosed. Strange New Worlds has the perfect setting to delve into Sulu’s background—possibly exploring his time on another Starfleet vessel like the USS Farragut alongside a young James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley).

The Absence of Dr. McCoy
Interestingly, Sulu is not the only iconic character from Star Trek: The Original Series who has not yet made an entrance in Strange New Worlds. Alongside Paul Wesley and Ethan Peck, who have successfully redefined Kirk and Spock, the crucial role of Dr. Leonard McCoy remains unfulfilled. Historically portrayed by DeForest Kelley, the character has not yet found a new actor in the ongoing series, leaving fans eager for his potential inclusion.
While Karl Urban expertly embodied McCoy in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline films, the trajectory of Strange New Worlds suggests that viewers may soon see Sulu and Dr. McCoy join the crew. The series has teased some elements of McCoy’s earlier career, but it has substantial room to further explore his early Starfleet days. The introduction of both Sulu and McCoy, whether major characters or significant cameos, remains tantalizingly probable as the series evolves, and it’s only natural for a Sulu vs. Ortegas rivalry to emerge.
