The central figures in The Night Agent’s conspiracy are billionaire Gordon Wick and Vice President Redfield. Wick employs two hired assassins, Ellen and Dale, to eliminate anyone who threatens to expose their involvement in a devastating metro bombing. Their actions lead to the deaths of several key characters, including Rose’s relatives and Cisco.
Despite their lethal abilities, Ellen and Dale fall flat as villains, possessing little depth and resembling more of a cartoonish representation of antagonists. Their predictable downfalls, with Dale meeting his end at Peter’s hands and Ellen facing her demise in the finale, highlight the need for fresh, more engaging villains in the upcoming season. Season 2 should focus on introducing more intricate and compelling adversaries that resonate with viewers.
Examining the Flaws in Season 1’s Assassin Subplot
Emphasizing Deeper Stories for Villains
While The Night Agent effectively weaves a complex tapestry of subplots, the narrative concerning Ellen and Dale feels superfluous. As hired guns, their roles should have been limited; however, they unceremoniously morphed into significant players with a storyline that was not only unnecessary but also uninspiring, hindering audience empathy towards them as formidable foes.
The frequent, almost implausible encounters between Rose, Peter, and the assassins only served to further undermine their credibility. True assassins are typically portrayed as methodical and calculated; Ellen, who yearns for a conventional life while simultaneously operating in her deadly profession, diminishes the tension surrounding her character. With The Night Agent Season 2 set to premiere on January 23, there is hope for a new mystery that encompasses better-developed villains to truly challenge the protagonists.
