The airplane, a Boeing 737-800, was en route from Thailand to Muan International Airport in southern South Korea. After one unsuccessful landing attempt, the aircraft encountered a bird strike warning. The pilot subsequently issued a distress signal before the plane, with its front landing gear still retracted, overshot the runway and collided with a concrete barrier, resulting in a catastrophic fire.
National Mourning Period
In light of this disaster, South Korea has declared a national period of mourning, which began on December 29 and is set to conclude on January 4. This period allows the nation to collectively honor and remember the victims of this tragic event.
