The highly anticipated Dancing with the Stars season 33 kicked off on September 17, 2023, featuring an exciting lineup of celebrities showcasing their dance skills to win over the audience. This popular reality show pairs celebrity contestants with expert ballroom dancers, as they perform each week and are evaluated by both a panel of judges and viewers at home.
Among the standout moments in the premiere episode was Anna Delvey, who took to the dance floor with her ankle monitor, which sparked considerable conversation among fans. Delvey faced charges for eight crimes in 2019 and served her time in prison. After her release in 2021, she was charged with visa overstays in 2022. Due to her legal circumstances, she was permitted to compete on DWTS with the stipulation that she wear her ankle monitor while performing.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba expressed her support for Delvey during the show, urging viewers to refrain from passing judgment. Following the premiere, Delvey spoke with People, revealing her gratitude for Inaba’s backing and advocating for a second chance.
“Yeah, the people should give me a second chance, and I served my time, and paid my restitution,” Delvey commented.
Sharing his thoughts on Inaba’s words, Delvey’s dance partner, Ezra Sosa, highlighted the core essence of Dancing with the Stars, emphasizing that the show revolves around dancing, rather than past controversies. He remarked:
“No matter where you come from, it is just about the dance. And no matter what happens, you go out on the floor, you dance, you get your score. And I really do think what she said was really meaningful.”
Anna Delvey and Ezra Sosa Discuss Her Ankle Monitor on Dancing with the Stars
For her performance, Delvey wore a vibrant two-piece skirt set adorned with a design featuring purple, blue, burnt orange, and yellow hues. Notably, her ankle monitor was creatively decorated to match her outfit, which drew attention.
In an interview with People, both Delvey and Sosa discussed their unique approach to incorporating the ankle monitor into their routine. Sosa explained how he choreographed the dance to highlight Delvey’s monitor, declaring it the “real star of the show.”
“I just really wanted to show off the ankle monitor. Let’s be real here. It’s the real star of the show,” Sosa stated.
Delvey added that the monitor had become part of her creative costume, with custom decorations to complement her ensemble. She praised her costume department for devising a way to adorn the monitor without altering its function, explaining:
“The costume department created a detachable sleeve for the monitor. They just used double-sided tape to keep it on and we took it off right after.”
Delvey reassured fans that there were no restrictions on personalizing the ankle monitor; they just needed to ensure it remained undamaged. Looking ahead to the rest of Dancing with the Stars season 33, Sosa expressed his enthusiasm for witnessing Delvey’s journey and growth as a dancer.
Post-performance, Delvey reflected on her experience, admitting to feeling nervous but ultimately grateful for the opportunity to perform live for the first time. She voiced her desire to improve on her dancing skills, saying:
“I was a bit nervous, and I feel like I could have done better with my dance, especially during the rehearsals, but it was a great experience. I performed in front of a live audience, and that was my first time,”Delvey shared.
The next episode of Dancing with the Stars season 33 is scheduled to air on ABC on September 24, 2024.
