It’s well-known that former President Donald Trump is not exactly a self-made individual. He received a substantial inheritance from his father, Fred Trump. One might wonder if Donald Trump’s sartorial choices are reflective of the traditional wealthy style?
A Trump supporter, known as Will, expressed his admiration for Trump’s visit to McDonald’s on Twitter. Even though Trump was dressed in an apron, Will claimed that this occasion represented a “glimmer of nobility.” He felt that Trump was genuinely being himself—a wealthy man simply sporting the attire befitting his status. This notion was further highlighted when he criticized Prince Harry for opting for a more casual look at his wedding to Meghan Markle. This wasn’t merely an attack on Prince Harry; it carried with it elements of both racism and classism.
Fortunately, a well-known authority on men’s fashion, Derek Guy, stepped in to clarify the misconceptions surrounding this view. He posted a tweet, stating, “I disagree and will explain why you are wrong.” In his response, Derek provided an insightful overview of the Patrician style, often described as the old money aesthetic. These tailored suits feature soft shoulders, are complemented by rep ties, and frequently come in Shetland knits, which Derek characterized as “very demure and very mindful.”

This style contrasts starkly with Trump’s choice of Brioni suits, which, while belonging to a high-end Italian label, are known for their boldness and sharply structured shoulders. When paired with Trump’s signature shiny red tie, one cannot accurately label his attire as “old money.” Derek emphasized that Trump’s fashion approach aligns more with that of an ostentatious businessman and entertainer.
The Dress Defines the Individual
As Dolly Parton aptly stated, “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap.” This notion seems equally applicable to Trump, with his extravagant and unrefined suits. What does it matter if Trump never opts for a more subdued attire? His fashion sense does not reflect the aristocratic essence that many of his supporters wish to associate him with.
For individuals like Will, donning a suit inherently suggests affluence. However, it’s essential to recognize that suits are frequently worn by many working-class professionals. For instance, funeral directors, to name one group, typically don formal suits and ties. Butlers do as well.
