In a surprising twist of fate, Ian McKellen came close to joining the iconic Harry Potter franchise following the death of Richard Harris, yet he ultimately declined to take on the role of Dumbledore. The exceptional casting in the Harry Potter films is one of its many strengths, showcasing a line-up of distinguished British actors like Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, and Gary Oldman, who have collectively garnered numerous prestigious awards including Emmys, Oscars, and Golden Globes. These renowned talents don’t merely occupy minor roles; several pivotal characters from J.K. Rowling’s universe are brought to life by these legendary performers.
Despite this illustrious cast, Ian McKellen stands out as a notable absence. With an impressive acting career spanning since the 1960s, McKellen has played significant roles in not one but two other fantasy franchises, as Magneto in the X-Men films and Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings series. Given his illustrious background, many fans felt he would have been an ideal fit for the Wizarding World. However, he chose to turn down the Dumbledore part for a particularly compelling reason.

Richard Harris portrayed Albus Dumbledore in both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, before his passing in October 2002 at the age of 72. Remarkably, Harris initially turned down the role three times until a visit from his 11-year-old granddaughter compelled him to accept, declaring she would never speak to him again otherwise (source: The Guardian). Despite his initial reluctance, Harris voiced concerns post-acceptance, stating:
“Because, you see, I don’t just want to be remembered for being in those bloody films, and I’m afraid that’s what is going to happen to me.”
Notwithstanding his reservations, Harris’s portrayal was instrumental in the success of these early films. His performance beautifully encapsulated the whimsical and wise qualities of Dumbledore, as described by Rowling. Although he spoke with a deliberate cadence, his sharp wit remained spirited.
Sadly, Harris was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease in August 2022, passing away just months later (source: SMH). This loss posed a significant challenge for the Harry Potter series, as Dumbledore’s character would continue to evolve into a central theme. Christopher Columbus, the director of the first two films, had previously promised Harris he would avoid recasting the character, convinced of Harris’s imminent recovery (source: THR). His later iterations of Dumbledore were marked by a fiercer presence, aligning perfectly with the darker themes emerging in the series. Gambon’s representation added depth to Dumbledore, transforming him into the formidable figure feared by Voldemort.
