Plot Summary
In the Summers explores the evolving dynamics of a parent-child relationship, focusing on the divorced father, Vincente, who spends time with his daughters, Violeta and Eva, over four summers. The narrative unfolds over nearly two decades as the daughters transition from young adolescence into early adulthood.
Upon their first visit, Violeta and Eva arrive in the serene desert town of Las Cruces, New Mexico, to enjoy summer at their father’s Spanish Adobe-style residence.
What begins as an awkward reunion turns into a memorable summer where Vincente introduces the girls to his hometown, showers them with gifts, and takes them stargazing.
As time progresses, Vincente’s struggle with alcohol addiction strains his relationship with his daughters, making them increasingly cautious of his volatile temper. Additionally, Vincente exhibits a favoritism toward Violeta, leaving Eva feeling overlooked and yearning for her father’s affection.
In a pivotal moment, Eva returns alone for the third summer while Violeta remains in California. Eager to gain her father’s approval, Eva assists at home with Vincente’s wife and their newborn daughter, Natalia.
The film’s conclusion starkly contrasts its beginning. As the distance between Vincente and his daughters widens, the young women opt to stay at a rented place when they arrive. Even though Vincente is starting to turn his life around, their estrangement suggests that it may be too late to mend their fractured bond.
