Protests in South Korea: K-Pop Fans Illuminate the Movement
As protests against President Yoon Suk Yeol intensify, members of the K-pop community are making their voices heard in unique ways. During recent demonstrations, fans have utilized their official fan lightsticks as a symbol of solidarity and support.
Renewed Vigils and Creative Protests
Following the rejection of a request to impeach President Yoon, protesters organized a second series of candlelight vigils over the weekend. However, rather than traditional candles, participants on December 7 showcased their vibrant lightsticks to illuminate the gatherings, creating a stunning visual of unity.

Surge in Popularity of Fan Merchandise
The use of lightsticks has notably increased their demand across South Korea. “This is the NCT lightstick (Neobong) that became popular as a protest item this time. I used it once during NCT Dream’s solo concert last year, and it has stronger lighting power than the ver. 2 that came out this year. Get it now,”shared an enthusiastic fan. This model stands out for its brightness and durability, making it more appealing than traditional LED candles.
NCT’s lightstick, known for its customizable features, allows users to attach phrases like “impeach” and “step down,” further enhancing its significance during protests.

Rapid Sales and Diverse Choices
As of December 9, a notable increase in idol lightstick sales has been observed in various areas of Seoul, particularly on the Karrot market. NCT lightsticks, popular among a vast fandom known as NCTzen, quickly sold out, leading many to seek second-hand options.
Another sought-after fan item is Epik High’s cheering stick, affectionately nicknamed Park Kyu Bong. Its unique design, resembling a middle finger, captures the essence of protest sentiment effectively.
Other Notable Lightsticks Making Waves
In addition to the NCT and Epik High offerings, several other fanlights have gained traction among the protest attendees. These include:
- Hammerbong (BLACKPINK)
- Pharynx/Eribong (EXO)
- BangBong (BIGBANG)
- Shining Star (SHINee)
Recent sales for these lightsticks have ranged from ₩20,000 to ₩40,000 (approximately $14 to $28), showcasing their appeal during this social movement.
