“Incredible Show”— Courteney Cox Reflects on the 30-Year Legacy of Friends

Courteney Cox recently reflected on the “incredible”legacy of the beloved TV sitcom Friends, which first premiered on September 22, 1994, and celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Cox shared her thoughts about this milestone during an interview with People at the Rock4EV event in Malibu, California, on Saturday, September 21. She stated:

“That show is incredible. Every joke holds up, all the characters are just so amazing, and we [had] the best writers in the world.”

The actress expressed her gratitude, noting that she feels “lucky”that the long-running sitcom “continues on through all generations,”which makes her feel “very fortunate.”

For those unfamiliar, Courteney Cox portrayed the iconic character Monica Geller in Friends. The series also features Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, the late Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, and Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay. The cast is rounded out by Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani and David Schwimmer as Ross Geller.

Courteney Cox on Her Character’s Enduring Popularity

In her interview, Courteney Cox reminisced about Friends‘ legacy, remarking that it feels “just insane”because time seems to fly by so quickly.

It’s been 20 years since the series finale aired in 2004, yet the characters remain alive in the hearts of fans.

Cox spoke about how Monica’s character continues to thrive in pop culture, humorously stating:

“Monica is alive and well. Are you kidding?”

Due to Friends‘ enduring legacy, Cox believes it would be challenging to recapture the original magic of the show. She commented on rumors regarding a potential reboot centered around the children of the original cast, a concept pitched by creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane.

Kauffman mentioned on The Today Show on September 20 that she has received numerous emails from fans suggesting a next-gen version featuring the next generation of Gellers, Bings, and Buffays.

However, Cox stated she “can’t imagine”that project coming to fruition, adding:

“It’s hard to try to redo anything. Anything with ‘re’ in front of it with this group—I think it’s so special.”

Cox acknowledged that it’s been a “little while”since she last watched an episode of Friends, but admitted that whenever she stumbles upon an episode, she “can’t help but [watch].”

Recently, she celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Friends finale. The last episode aired on May 6, 2024. In a May 7 Instagram reel showcasing the show’s final scene, where the six friends head out for coffee, she expressed her “forever gratitude.”

Cox also pondered how they “were able to act through all the tears,”referencing the filming of the series’ closing scene.
