At the recent The Game Awards 2024, the renowned PlayStation developer Naughty Dog unveiled their latest creation, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This upcoming sci-fi action game, exclusive to the PS5, marks the studio’s first new intellectual property in over a decade, led by the acclaimed creative director Neil Druckmann. Players will step into the shoes of Jordan A. Mun, a talented bounty hunter who becomes stranded on a mysterious alien planet following an unexpected turn of events. Set in an alternate universe thousands of years into the future, the game draws significant inspiration from iconic 1980s sci-fi cinema, particularly the animated classic Akira.
While detailed gameplay mechanics remain under wraps, the reveal trailer hints at a strong emphasis on melee combat, setting a distinct tone that diverges from Naughty Dog’s typical focus on third-person shooting. Druckmann has also disclosed that Intergalactic will adopt a narrative structure reminiscent of a television series, a departure from the conventional storytelling methods seen in prior Naughty Dog titles. Nonetheless, some thematic elements echo those found in The Last of Us, offering fans familiar touches within the novel storyline.
Interestingly, Druckmann alluded to the show’s unique structure as early as 2022, well before its official announcement, building anticipation for a project that intends to reshape how narratives are conveyed in video games.
Familiar Voices: Talent from The Last of Us Join Intergalactic
An Ensemble Cast for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
Consistent with trends in modern AAA game development, Intergalactic boasts an impressive cast of voice actors. Notably, Tony Dalton, recognized for his portrayal of Lalo Salamanca in Better Call Saul, is featured in this exciting title, making a brief appearance in the gameplay trailer. Similarly, celebrated stand-up comedian Kumail Nanjiani takes on a role as a member of an intergalactic crime syndicate. Additionally, the actor Troy Baker, well-known for voicing Joel in The Last of Us, is confirmed to have a part in the game, although details regarding his role remain undisclosed.
Jordan A. Mun: A Familiar Face from The Last of Us
The character of Jordan A. Mun is portrayed by actress Tati Gabrielle, whose credits include popular series such as The 100, You, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. While Gabrielle is not typically associated with voice acting for video games, her collaboration with Naughty Dog is extensive. She played the antagonist Jo Braddock in the recent Uncharted movie and will also portray the character of Nora Harris in the eagerly anticipated second season of The Last of Us on HBO.
Nora Harris is a significant character featured in The Last of Us Part II, associated with the game’s main antagonistic faction, the Washington Liberation Front. While she presents challenges for Ellie, she shares a bond with Abby Anderson, the other playable protagonist. Although the specifics regarding the TV adaptation of Nora’s character remain under wraps, continuity with the game’s storyline is expected, given the show’s dedication to faithfully recreating the original narrative.
A Collaborative Legacy: Co-Writer Joins the Cast
In a compelling twist, Halley Gross, who has contributed as a screenwriter for both Banshee and Westworld, also features in Intergalactic as an eyepatch-wearing character seen in the reveal trailer. Serving as a co-writer for The Last of Us Part II, Gross brings her expertise to both sides of the production spectrum, making her involvement particularly noteworthy. This collaboration alongside Gabrielle represents a fascinating intersection for fans of Naughty Dog, showcasing the studio’s interconnected storytelling prowess.
