Jack Kirby’s New Gods Make a Triumphant Return
For the first time in decades, the legendary characters created by Jack Kirby are back in the spotlight with their own series, New Gods. During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the excitement among fans soared following the announcement that DC Comics would be reviving the New Gods as part of its ambitious All In initiative.
Impact of Darkseid’s Demise
As explored in the DC All In Special, Darkseid meets his demise, leading to significant repercussions throughout the DC Universe. Screen Rant interviewed the creative team behind New Gods to gain insights into this pivotal moment and its implications for the Fourth World.
Screen Rant: Ram, with Darkseid’s death marking the beginning of a new era in the All In Special, how does this event shape your narrative?
Ram V: Darkseid’s death serves as a critical catalyst for our plot. The recent preview for issue one explicitly reflects this, as his demise occurs on the very first page. The ripple effects are profound: his death prompts the Source to deliver a prophecy to Metron, our favorite New God and a master of manipulation. This event leads to a cascade of actions, creating unknown motives for characters spanning various realms—Earth, New Genesis, and Apokolips—thus establishing the conflict’s foundation.
Ram V: More intriguingly, Darkseid’s death may lure entities across the universe that once feared him. With his absence creating a power vacuum, villains perceive the chaos as an opportunity for invasion, believing the cosmos here is ripe for conquest. Our main antagonists don’t think of themselves as gods; instead, they see themselves as the universe’s opportunists, ready to exploit the newfound instability. Thus, the overarching narrative and villainy is deeply rooted in Darkseid’s demise.
Artistic Collaboration: Ram V and Evan Cagle
Evan, having collaborated with Ram on projects like Detective Comics and Dawnrunner, what motivated you to join the New Gods team?
Evan Cagle: Initially, I planned to take a prolonged break after Dawnrunner. However, when Ram brought up New Gods, I couldn’t resist. It was about midway through Dawnrunner when he started suggesting this new venture. I was reluctant, citing my need for a vacation, but Ram insisted, “You’ll only need about a week.”
Ram V: Indeed, I told him he has a lifetime ahead of him.
Evan Cagle: (laughs) Yes, and I suppose my desire for a break was dismissed rather casually! Nonetheless, my collaboration with Ram always reveals the brilliance behind his concepts, even when I’m initially unsure.
Exploring Family Dynamics in New Gods
Ram, during our last discussion, the theme of fatherhood surfaced as a central element to your narrative. The portrayal of Mister Miracle as an exhausted father provides a fresh comedic element. Can you elaborate on this focus and the roles of fatherhood and sonhood through characters like Mister Miracle and Orion?
Ram V: All great mythologies revolve around family – relationships filled with conflict and affection. My approach to New Gods emphasizes these familial ties. The emotional conflict intricately explores dynamics of fatherhood, showcasing characters that embody these universal relationships. Examining these themes through god-like figures allows for a grand discussion on our more personal human connections. For instance, portraying Scott’s challenges with diaper duty mirrors real parental struggles.
Diving Deep into New Gods Mythology
Beyond Mister Miracle and Orion, what other New Gods will play roles in this saga? And Evan, how did you put your unique spin on these revered characters?
Ram V: I envisioned a diverse cast from the outset. Despite the complexity, I challenged myself to tell a compelling story involving numerous characters—around 20-30! By the series’ midpoint, the Justice League enters the fold. My goal is to weave these intimate tales of personal struggle with a large-scale cosmic backdrop.
Evan Cagle: It’s indeed a tightrope walk. Some characters are so established that I hesitate to diverge significantly from their original designs. For others, I can place my distinct imprint, granted I respect their core essence. Scott and Barda’s designs are particularly notable, and I’m drawn to how wonderfully detailed Kirby’s original work remains.
Barda’s Role in the New Narrative
As we delve into Barda’s character amidst her ongoing role in the Birds of Prey, how does she fit into this larger story, particularly exploring both motherhood and the pressures she faces?
Ram V: Barda plays a pivotal role in challenging Scott, providing the push he needs to take action. She embodies strength, determined to lift him from his introspections. Their dynamic showcases a refreshing portrayal of relationship development, sidestepping the typical drama associated with long-standing characters.
Creative Process between Ram and Evan
Evan, your artwork truly brings the series to life. Can you provide insights into your creative working relationship with Ram? Is it more spontaneous or structured?
Ram V: My input is often minimal; I prefer to present my rough sketches, allowing Evan the freedom to enhance those concepts into magnificent pages that dazzle. However, both of us understand the need for a structured approach, especially with the rhythm of a monthly series.
New Gods in the Context of the DC Universe
How does New Gods integrate into the expansive narrative of the All In initiative?
Ram V: Although the concept for New Gods was established well before All In, discussions with editorial colleagues led to strategic adjustments making our series increasingly pivotal within this saga. Ultimately, New Gods will emerge as a crucial connector between both the All In and Absolute Universe storylines.
