Introducing Tommy Maximoff in the Next MCU Project: What to Expect

Key Insights

  • After the events of WandaVision, Wanda’s children, Billy and Tommy, have been reintroduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
  • A new Disney+ series titled Vision Quest is in the works, focusing on the character of Vision.
  • There are indications that this series may also reintroduce Tommy Maximoff, Vision’s long-lost son.

The absence of the Scarlet Witch in the current MCU narrative has shifted attention towards her twins, Billy and Tommy Maximoff. With multiple projects underway at Marvel Studios, there is one particular series where these characters could make their next appearance.

Billy and Tommy were first brought to life in the MCU through WandaVision, thanks to Wanda Maximoff’s reality-bending powers. Although Wanda relinquished her fabricated existence by the end of the series, her search for her children persists, as seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she sought them across different universes. The spinoff series Agatha All Along confirmed that the souls of Billy and Tommy were not lost when Wanda’s hex faded. Specifically, Billy’s essence is shown to integrate into a new host named William Kaplan, while Agatha’s final moments suggest that Tommy’s soul will follow a similar path.

While many Marvel series on Disney+ function independently, WandaVision stands out as one of the few to receive a direct continuation. The spinoff, Agatha All Along, follows the story of Agatha Harkness, who was first introduced in WandaVision and delves into unresolved plotlines from the original series. However, this is not the only sequel originating from WandaVision.

Vision, portrayed by Paul Bettany, is set to headline his own Disney+ series, tentatively titled Vision Quest. He was last seen in WandaVision as the ‘White Vision’, a reconstructed version of the beloved Avenger. This iteration of Vision was reanimated by S.W.O.R.D. after his demise in Avengers: Infinity War, with the mission of neutralizing Wanda and her hex over Westview. Unlike his original version, this White Vision has a distinctive appearance and operates without the Mind Stone.

What Became of White Vision?

The finale of WandaVision culminated in a confrontation between White Vision and Wanda’s version of Vision within the Westview anomaly. Ultimately, Wanda’s Vision triumphed by enabling White Vision to reclaim his original memories, paving the way for him to embrace his true identity. The last time viewers saw him, he had reconciled with his true self and vanished from Westview.

Marvel appears poised to continue White Vision’s narrative in his upcoming series. With Bettany reprising his role, Terry Matalas, known for Star Trek: Picard, will serve as the showrunner. Reports also suggest a return of James Spader as Ultron, with Todd Stashwick cast in an undisclosed role. Although specific plot details remain undisclosed, rumors hint at the series focusing on Vision’s pursuit of a renewed purpose.

Integrating Tommy into Vision’s Journey

As the MCU expands, the arrival of Tommy Maximoff seems logical to occur in Vision Quest. If the narrative follows Vision’s journey to redefine his purpose, discovering and reuniting with his long-lost son could serve as a profound motivation. Just as Agatha All Along managed to weave Billy Maximoff’s arc seamlessly into the larger storyline, Vision Quest has the potential to introduce Tommy while setting the stage for a reunion with his brother.

Recent reports from industry insider Daniel RPK hinted at Marvel casting a young actor aged between 18 and 20 for a lead role in Vision Quest. Although still unconfirmed, this character’s age strongly aligns with that of Tommy Maximoff. In comic lore, Tommy, who takes on the identity of Thomas Shepherd, is depicted as a troubled youth whose powers often lead to dire consequences—an engaging narrative that could blend well within Vision’s quest to mentor him, ultimately revealing their familial connection.

Given the events in Agatha All Along, Marvel Studios appears to be gearing up for Tommy’s on-screen debut, whether via his own solo series or in a follow-up to WandaVision. The most fitting integration seems to suggest that Vision Quest will serve as his introduction.

The development of Vision Quest is already underway, with a targeted release slated for 2026.
