Invincible is gearing up for an exciting season 3, bringing back a character who didn’t receive much screen time in season 2. This animated series, drawn from the comics created by Robert Kirkman, boasts a vast and diverse cast. Despite Mark Grayson, also known as Invincible (voiced by Steven Yeun), being the central character of the series, the supportive heroes, formidable villains, and everyday individuals surrounding him play equally important roles in the narrative on Prime Video. Season 3 is set to maintain its primary focus on Mark, while also delving deeper into characters like Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins), Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), and Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen), among others.
Notably, even when Mark appears to have vanquished villains, these characters continue to emerge throughout the series. The season 1 finale hinted at the reappearance of several adversaries Mark had previously faced, such as Doc Seismic (Chris Diamantopoulos) and the Sequids. This narrative tactic proved fruitful in season 2, as many of these villains returned. This trend will persist into season 3, featuring the comeback of an especially underutilized character.
Darkwing Will Return In Invincible Season 3
Darkwing is Still Dead, But Darkwing II is Back
The trailer for season 3 reveals the return of Darkwing, specifically his successor, Darkwing II (Cleveland Berto). The original Darkwing, portrayed by Lennie James, was a key member of the original Guardians of the Globe but met his tragic end at the hands of Omni-Man in the series’ premiere episode. This character serves as a humorous homage to DC’s Batman and is known for defending Midnight City. In season 2, viewers were introduced to Night Boy, the original Darkwing’s sidekick, who has since stepped into Darkwing’s shoes.
Darkwing II embraces a vigilante approach, often resorting to deadly measures against suspected criminals as he pledges to protect Midnight City. His conflict with Mark culminated in Mark’s triumph over Darkwing II before his connection to the enigmatic Shadowverse could be further explored. This absence is set to change in season 3, where Darkwing II’s return promises to introduce new complications for Mark and the current Guardians of the Globe.
What Darkwing’s Role In Invincible Season 3 Could Be
He Will Likely Play Into Cecil’s Conflict With Mark
Darkwing II’s involvement in season 3 is likely tied to Cecil, who has emerged as an antagonist in Mark’s journey. Cecil is utilizing the Reanimen cyborgs and other formidable tools at the Global Defense Agency’s disposal against Mark. Following Mark’s previous victory over Darkwing II, he was drawn into the orbit of the Global Defense Agency, signaling that Cecil may deploy him as a formidable asset. This could trigger an intense confrontation between Mark and Darkwing II, especially since the latter is expected to have refined his Shadowverse capabilities.
In the original comics, Darkwing II ultimately redeems himself, teaming up with the Reanimen to rescue others from Doc Seismic. Given the emphasis on Cecil’s deployment of the Reanimen against Mark in the promotional materials for season 3, it seems probable that Cecil will utilize Darkwing II as a weapon against Mark as well. As a result, Mark will find himself facing a daunting array of challenges in Invincible season 3, battling not only Darkwing II but also the Reanimen and whatever new strategies Cecil devises.
