The iOS 18 update has introduced notable changes to the user interface (UI), impacting everything from the home screen to the control center. Features that have been longstanding in the Android ecosystem are now available to iOS enthusiasts, providing a level of customization that many users appreciate.
While the updates have garnered a positive response from a large segment of users, there are those who feel that the new UI diverges too much from the familiar interface of previous versions. These users can opt to remain on iOS 17 for as long as they wish. However, the question remains: should you stay with the older version? Many people assume that new functionality equates to enhanced performance, but this isn’t always the case for everyone.

Control Center
The Control Center in iOS 18 has undergone significant enhancements. Users now have the ability to move and resize each tile, as well as to add multiple scrollable pages, a customization option that was not available in iOS 17.7.
This new feature will certainly appeal to those who enjoy personalization, particularly users migrating from the Android space. However, others, including myself, might prefer the classic design with its squircle icon shape instead of the circular one introduced in iOS 18. In my opinion, iOS 17.7’s Control Center ranks higher.
Home Screen
In previous iOS versions from 13 through 17.7, home screens maintained a white app background regardless of whether light or dark mode was enabled. With the iOS 18 update, users now have the option to select a darker or tinted app background, catering to those who favor dark mode.
Unlike the control center, this change is optional, allowing users to revert to the classic white app background if they choose. As such, iOS 18 leads in this category.
Security
The introduction of the option to add Touch/Face ID locks to individual apps in iOS 18 significantly enhances user privacy and security. This function prevents unauthorized access to sensitive content like photos and messages, especially useful for parents.
Additionally, iOS 18 has moved the saved passwords section from the Settings app into a dedicated Passwords app, enhancing its usability. This makes iOS 18 a superior choice for security.
3rd Party and DIY Repairs
User @AbbasCfcJT26 on X has reported the addition of new iPhone parts and repair services that could facilitate third-party and DIY repairs. In contrast, iOS 17.7 treated genuine parts installed manually as unrecognized, leading to compatibility issues.
iOS 18, however, resolves this by offering the option to “Repair”or verify whether a part is a genuine Apple component. Should it be confirmed genuine, iOS will recognize it accordingly. This feature gives iOS 18 the edge in this category.
Photos App
The Photos app has received its most extensive redesign since iOS 12, removing the tabs at the bottom and combining all functionalities on one screen that users will need to scroll through.
Many users on Reddit have expressed dissatisfaction with the redesign since the public beta started, and I share their sentiments. The new UI is not to my liking, so, iOS 17.7 is, in my view, the winner in this area.
Safari App
The Safari web browser has also seen useful enhancements in its reader mode, now enabling users to hide various web elements such as ads and subscription popups. This results in a cleaner interface that allows for undistracted reading. Thus, iOS 18 claims victory in this aspect.
Final Verdict: iOS 18 vs iOS 17.7
Despite some victories for iOS 17.7, iOS 18 excels in most features and design elements. It represents a superior Apple operating system, which is expected to improve further with the forthcoming Apple Intelligence update slated for December 2024, featuring iOS 18.1.
However, if you prefer to remain on iOS 17.7, rest assured that you will continue to receive security updates, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of this version without compromising your security.
