Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever created, leading many to speculate whether a third installment, Red Dead Redemption 3, will ever be developed. Here’s what we know to date.
Is Red Dead Redemption 3 currently being developed?
While there are ongoing discussions and speculation about a potential third game, there has yet to be any official announcement regarding Red Dead Redemption 3. Rockstar Games has also refrained from sharing any updates about its production.
Nevertheless, it seems highly improbable that a new installment isn’t in the pipeline, especially considering the phenomenal success of Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar typically takes considerable time to develop their titles. For instance, Grand Theft Auto V, released in 2013, achieved remarkable commercial and critical acclaim. However, Grand Theft Auto VI isn’t expected until late 2025, resulting in a staggering twelve-year interval. In comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted in 2018, just eight years following the original game’s release.
What storyline could Red Dead Redemption 3 follow?
A significant portion of the fan base has shown interest in featuring Jack Marston, the son of John Marston and a playable character in the earlier game, as the lead in a new installment. However, there are also many players who oppose this idea, arguing that the setting wouldn’t be in a remarkably different historical context. Although a fresh setting could be interesting, it might feel strange for players who link the franchise to the iconic Wild West.
Moreover, there isn’t a compelling narrative reason for Jack to mirror his father’s journey. With the revenge for his family completed, he has the option to lead a conventional life. Though he retains the weapon he used against Ross, it doesn’t provide enough justification for him to pursue a path of violence.
