Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew episode 3.
For some time, I’ve humorously suggested that Din Djarin might make an appearance in various Star Wars shows. However, with the latest episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, it seems more like a plausible theory than just wishful thinking. Skeleton Crew is set during the timeline of The Mandalorian, featuring characters such as the Nikto pirate Vane, who was introduced in season 3 of The Mandalorian. Although the creators have mentioned that the plot doesn’t strictly rely on a timeline, there have been notable developments that may link these narratives more closely than anticipated.
Interestingly, Vane was not originally part of the Skeleton Crew storyline. The creators chose to retain his character from The Mandalorian season 3, allowing him to play a significant role in this new series. The thematic connections between these two shows have emerged more compellingly, especially concerning Vane and the pirates, creating a crossover that has yet to be matched by other series within the “Mandoverse.”Based on these intersections and the revelations from episode 3 of Skeleton Crew, my musings have transformed into serious theories about the potential for a Din Djarin cameo.
Is It Just a Coincidence Skeleton Crew Is Set In The Mandalorian Era?
These Stories Are Already Overlapping
As previously noted, Skeleton Crew is set in the same era as The Mandalorian, taking place after season 3. The show’s creators stated that while initially untethered to a specific timeframe, the overwhelming success of The Mandalorian led to collaborations with its producers, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, to position their series within this shared universe. However, this does not imply a lack of opportunities to weave storylines together; rather, it enhances their creative freedom for connections.
A particular highlight is the decision to incorporate Vane into Skeleton Crew. Vane has a complex history with Din Djarin—having previously clashed with him when Din defended Nevarro and thwarted Vane’s crew. Vane’s motivation for revenge and Din’s likely awareness of his former enemy creates a fresh layer to the narrative, hinting at the possibility of future encounters.
Skeleton Crew Is Suspiciously Close To The Hydian Way
Nevarro Is Located On This Hyperspace Lane
Vane’s piracy, specifically targeting Nevarro, is aligned with the infamous Hydian Way hyperspace lane—an area now closely related to the plot of Skeleton Crew. The series unfolds mainly around Port Borgo, a bustling spaceport populated with smugglers and pirates, strategically situated near this significant hyperspace route. This location serves as a convenient halfway point for illicit activities while also linking the narratives of Din Djarin and the pirate threat to this locale.
As piracy resurfaces in this region, it creates potential risks for Din and Grogu, who have made Nevarro their sanctuary, residing in a cabin on this planet. Given that Din previously aided in removing the pirate stronghold from Nevarro, the renewed pirate threat adds urgency and intrigue to the storyline.
Skeleton Crew Episode 3 Really Did Make Din Djarin A Logical Part Of This Story
This Sounds Like A Job For The Mandalorian…
The pivotal moment shifting my perspective from humorous speculation to genuine theory originated in episode 3 of Skeleton Crew. During this episode, Jod Na Nawood (played by Jude Law) manages to escape the brig at Port Borgo with four children, ultimately seeking help from “Kh’ymm”to plan their next move. However, Kh’ymm reveals Jod’s true identity as Crimson Jack, a title familiar to the New Republic for its notorious implications.
Connections to Din Djarin emerge through various plot points in this episode. Notably, Captain Brutus, who replaces Jod, puts a bounty on Jod’s head when he escapes, showcasing the bounty hunting element that’s central to Din’s story—even if he’s currently distanced from the formal Bounty Hunter’s Guild.
Moreover, Kh’ymm calls upon two New Republic rangers, who might be based at the Adelphi Outpost— where Din Djarin is currently known to operate as he partners with Captain Carson Teva. Given Din’s history of protecting children, it’s logical to surmise he would be compelled to intervene if the New Republic believes Jack has abducted them.
The stakes are getting higher, especially since the New Republic is now on the lookout for Jack, who they suspect is endangering children. Din Djarin’s dedication to saving foundlings, as seen with Grogu, aligns perfectly with these developments, making a crossover or intervention from him highly likely.
While I remain skeptical about whether Star Wars will reinstate Din Djarin given previous narrative decisions (particularly with The Book of Boba Fett), the connections in Skeleton Crew suggest a tactical setup for an engaging appearance. Although my enthusiasm could be overly optimistic, I genuinely believe Skeleton Crew will shine even without Din. However, the potential for his return makes the predictions even more exciting.
