Rapper Young Thug has been incarcerated since 2022, and his girlfriend, Mariah the Scientist, recently opened up about their relationship on the latest episode of the podcast Unapologetically Angel, aired on September 20, 2024. The episode also featured Latto as a special guest.
Mariah, who is also a rising singer with three albums to her name, expressed her enduring love for Young Thug during the podcast. Despite being apart for a significant period, she frequently attends his court hearings to see him. She shared:
“Sometimes I fall asleep in there. I just go to breathe his air.”
In her discussion, Mariah reflected on the challenges of their long-distance relationship since his arrest:
“It’s hard… If somebody told me that a few months into my relationship my man would get locked up? He’s been locked up now for longer than we were in a relationship before he got locked up.”
Further into the conversation, Mariah contemplated the idea of marriage, mentioning the common expectations for brides regarding outfits and rings. However, she also expressed concerns about the responsibilities that come with marriage:
“I would love to be together forever, but with marriages, you assume there are liabilities, as well; like, if they have children or if they owe $100 million in taxes…you become one. So I just feel like it should be worth it.”
Following Mariah’s comments, netizens took to the comments section of Hollywood Unlocked’s Instagram post to voice their opinions. The post included clips from the interview, and one user responded to her statements:
Many responses included criticism toward Mariah for continuing to support Young Thug, with one user even advising others not to follow her. However, a segment of the online community sympathized with her, sensing that her remarks and body language indicated her pain over the situation.
Mariah the Scientist on Her Relationship with Young Thug
Mariah and Young Thug’s relationship reportedly started in 2021 when Thug posted photos on Instagram featuring them together. Their romance grew, and they were often seen on dates until his arrest in 2022. Despite his incarceration, their bond became official when Mariah shared intimate moments they had together.
Previously appearing on the podcast Way Up With Angela Yee, Mariah commented that Thug’s jail sentence “solidified”their relationship. She recounted her emotional journey during his incarceration:
“I think in the beginning I was so sensitive about it. I was so emotional, I was crying all the time. It was like you can’t be crying when you got a man in jail because it’s going to make him sad. So you can’t be acting like that.”
During a performance at Outside Lands festival in August 2023, Mariah passionately called for Young Thug’s release, addressing the audience:
“Now you know I got a man. He locked up. Free my baby daddy!”
However, Young Thug’s legal troubles persist, with multiple delays in his trial. He faces serious charges related to conspiracy to violate the RICO Act and involvement with a criminal street gang, alongside additional charges under the Controlled Substances Act and firearm possession.
