James Gunn Asserts: Guardians of the Galaxy Are Now More Powerful Than The Avengers

The latest installment of the MCU, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has reignited debates about the power dynamics within the Marvel universe. James Gunn’s comments regarding the capability of the Guardians over the Avengers have sparked much discussion. The Avengers initially set the stage for the MCU as a groundbreaking cinematic landscape in Joss Whedon’s landmark film, The Avengers. This paved the way for daring projects like Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which, at the time, featured a relatively lesser-known ensemble compared to heavyweight teams such as the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. However, thanks to Gunn’s visionary direction, the Guardians emerged as a premier superhero faction, elevating characters like Star-Lord, Drax, and Rocket Raccoon to the same level of acclaim as beloved icons like Iron Man and Captain America.

In their earlier adventures, the Guardians of the Galaxy distinctly differed from the Avengers. They battled cosmic adversaries such as Ronan the Accuser and Ego the Living Planet, primarily in realms beyond Earth. The turning point came when the Guardians first intersected with the Avengers’ narrative in Avengers: Infinity War, as Thanos embarked on his perilous quest to collect the Infinity Stones. Although the Guardians had deeper knowledge of Thanos’s might, their raw power paled in comparison to the Avengers, a team boasting formidable heroes including Thor, Captain Marvel, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Vision, and the Scarlet Witch.

Gunn’s Assertion of the Guardians’ Superiority

The Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers juxtaposed.

In a revealing episode from June 2023 of Inside of You featuring Michael Rosenbaum, James Gunn boldly asserted, “I always thought that the Guardians would beat the sh*t out of the Avengers, easily.” He pointed out that the advanced extraterrestrial technology wielded by the Guardians provides them with a distinct edge. “They’re in outer space. They have technology that is, you know, pretty advanced. So it would be hard to beat them.” Indeed, prior to the Avengers adopting nanotechnology and interstellar travel, the Guardians showcased innovative weapons, such as Peter Quill’s gravity mines and Yondu’s Yaka arrow, indicating a level of sophistication in their arsenal.

While the original iteration of the Guardians may have struggled to rival the Avengers’ strength, the new team featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 undeniably showcases superior power. The revitalized roster boasts formidable figures including Groot, Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, Cosmo, and Kraglin, plus the addition of Adam Warlock’s pet, Blurp. The combined might of Groot, Adam, and Phyla could potentially best many of the currently active Avengers, especially considering the Avengers’ current disarray and the complacency shown by members like Smart Hulk, White Vision, and Hawkeye.

As Phase 5 of the MCU progresses, a cohesive Avengers lineup has yet to re-emerge. Should a new villain of Thanos or Loki’s caliber reappear, Earth would arguably be safer in the capable hands of the reformed Guardians of the Galaxy compared to renowned lone heroes such as Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange. While the Avengers have lost key leaders, Rocket Raccoon and Kraglin have emerged with invaluable combat abilities and leadership experience.
