Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power!
The stakes in Middle-earth are escalating as Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power unfolds. This latest installment from Prime Video, which serves as a prelude to J.R.R. Tolkien’s celebrated works, illustrates a world where darkness is increasingly prevalent. Sauron, masquerading as Annatar, has begun to forge new Rings of Power with Celebrimbor, while Galadriel battles against an Uruk invasion in Eregion. Meanwhile, The Stranger embarks on a journey of self-discovery alongside Nori and Poppy, all while strife brews in Númenor, which is engulfed in civil war.
The season finale delivers a tumultuous climax as the Uruk forces succeed in their assault on the city of Eregion, leading to its destruction. Just as hope appears lost, Durin IV and the Dwarves arrive to rescue Gil-galad, Elrond, and Arondir from imminent death. The Stranger, having embraced his true identity as Gandalf, bids farewell to Nori and Poppy as they depart to assist the Stoors following the devastation inflicted by the Dark Wizard.
This season features a returning ensemble cast including Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Charlie Vickers as Sauron, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, Maxim Baldry as Isildur, and Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir, among many others. The series has not only shattered numerous viewership records but has also received widespread acclaim from fans and critics, paving the way for an equally ambitious Season 3.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay provided insights on Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. They discussed the implications of the kiss shared between Elrond and Galadriel in Episode 7, the timely reveal of The Stranger’s identity as Gandalf, the diminished focus on Númenor in the latter half of the season, and provided an optimistic update regarding Season 3.
McKay & Payne Clarify: Elrond and Galadriel’s Kiss “Is Not Romantic In Nature”
“Elves express their love in different ways.”
ScreenRant: It’s wonderful to connect with you both again since the premiere of Season 2.
Patrick McKay: It’s great to see you! We truly appreciate the support that ScreenRant has extended to our show.
I personally cherish the moment shared between Galadriel and Elrond. It was a surprisingly poignant scene that caught me off guard. Could you elaborate on how that scene was conceptualized, especially since dedicated Tolkien fans might question the direction because of Celeborn’s later significance?
Patrick McKay: From our perspective, the kiss was not intended to be interpreted romantically. It stemmed from Elrond’s profound care for Galadriel in a moment of fear for her life. This act was a way for him to create a distraction, facilitating her escape from constraints. It expresses a deep sense of love and regret, hinting at Elrond’s growing recognition of possible misjudgments regarding Galadriel’s arguments earlier in the story. It felt natural and organic to the narrative; however, it should not signal a romantic development between them in the future.
Indeed, there’s a significant platonic affection in that exchange.
Patrick McKay: Absolutely, and it’s essential to remember that Elves convey their love in unique ways.
JD Payne: They’re certainly more European in their expressions.
Patrick McKay: Yes, precisely— a bit more European! [Chuckles]
Unveiling Gandalf’s Identity “Really Made Sense”From A Canonical Perspective
“We wanted to resolve it before Season 4, not prolong the mystery.”
With the confirmation that The Stranger is Gandalf, I’m eager to hear how that pivotal moment developed in the writing process. How did you both decide this was the right time to reveal his identity amid the larger narrative planned across five seasons?
JD Payne: We aimed for the audience and the character’s discovery journey to unfold naturally. Initially, we left ourselves open to possibilities. As we began to conceptualize the show, we suspected who this character might ultimately be. The deepening friendship between him, Nori, and Poppy led us to realize that Gandalf indeed has a fondness for halflings—contrasting with other wizards like Saruman, who views them with disdain. This realization aligned with the canonical development we envisioned. The influence of our talented actor, Dan Weyman, also significantly guided this decision.
As the character embarks on a journey of self-discovery in Season 1, grappling with the nature of good and evil, it becomes vital for him to understand himself and his powers. This journey towards Tom Bombadil, the relationship with his staff, and his name coalesce into a coherent narrative. Moreover, we were keen not to extend the reveal indefinitely. We didn’t want to tease it out to “Season 4″without clarity.
Patrick McKay: Correct! By the opening episodes of Season 2, we aimed for the audience to recognize our intentions. We dropped many hints that suggest, “Yes, this is who he is.”The essential focus is on his growth and understanding of his identity, which is more significant than merely knowing his name.
Development of Season 3 of Rings of Power Is Progressing Smoothly
“It’s going to be outstanding.”
Details regarding Season 3 of The Rings of Power remain scarce. Are there any timelines available for the onset of writing or filming as you work on it?
JD Payne: Yes, we are actively working on it.
Patrick McKay: We’re fully engaged in the preparations!
JD Payne: The intensity of our preparations is high. We…
Patrick McKay: That’s about all we can disclose at this moment!
JD Payne: We assure you, we have exciting developments in the pipeline. It’s going to be exceptional.
Patrick McKay: Indeed, it will be incredible.
Understanding Númenor’s Reduced Emphasis in Season 2
“Númenor’s story is just beginning.”
One major observation from this season is the notable shift away from Númenor’s narrative in the latter half, especially after an intense political buildup in the first part. Is Númenor poised to regain its prominence in upcoming episodes?
Patrick McKay: Certainly! From the inception of this grand project, we envisioned it as a vast ensemble where different storylines would ebb and flow according to the unfolding narrative. While Númenor was not the central focus of Season 2, which leaned more into the creation of the Rings and the dynamic between Sauron and Celebrimbor, it is essential to acknowledge that Númenor’s narrative is far from concluded. Significant developments are on the horizon for Númenor.
Overview of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2
Season Two showcases Sauron’s resurgence. Cast out by Galadriel and stripped of allies and followers, he must now employ cunning strategies to rekindle his strength. Central to his dark ambitions is the crafting of the Rings of Power, designed to dominate the various peoples of Middle-earth. As the series escalates the scale and depth established in Season One, it immerses even cherished characters in the looming shadows of evil, pushing each to define their roles in a world teetering on the brink of disaster. The intricate relationships among Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, and Men become strained, fortifying the conflict as they fight to protect what they hold dearest: each other.
