JD Vance Breaks Picket Line to Allege Kamala Harris Harbors Anti-Catholic Sentiments

Here we go again—JD Vance is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A labor union at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has been on strike for over a year, yet he decided to breach the picket line to publish an opinion piece. The outcome? It’s undeniably frustrating.

This article centers on Vance’s belief that Harris harbors an animosity towards Catholics. Clearly, he is leveraging the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s platform to reach the Catholic demographic prevalent in Western Pennsylvania. As someone raised in a family with deep Catholic roots, attending numerous communions alongside friends, I certainly understand the community’s significance.

Essentially, Vance’s article reflects his ire at Harris advocating for the Catholic Church’s involvement in equality initiatives. He references legislation from 2019 that mandated Catholic hospitals to perform abortions and gender-affirming procedures. Additionally, he claims Harris pushed for the church to conduct same-sex marriages. All these initiatives are progressive. Having recently converted to Catholicism, Vance, despite his background, should reconsider his stance.

His rationale appears to stem from the notion that Catholics are somehow a marginalized group. “It’s an absurd double standard. While this administration has been busy targeting suburban Catholic dads, it has essentially ignored the nearly 300 attacks on Catholic churches since the leak of the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision in 2022,” Vance argues.

Now, perhaps my perspective is skewed, having been immersed in Catholicism from a young age, but I find it bizarre to claim that being Catholic qualifies one as a protected class. We are, in reality, quite numerous. Yet, Vance’s ongoing criticism of Harris is sadly a familiar narrative.

Growing up as a young woman of Italian and Scottish descent, Catholicism was a constant presence in my life. My grandparents were regular churchgoers every Sunday. Fortunately, my mother believed her children should decide for themselves, and while I often found myself in church, I escaped much of the guilt that tends to accompany others. This upbringing has prompted me to critically examine those who place unexamined trust in what the church promotes.

Movies like Spotlight, released in 2015, shed light on significant, troubling issues within the Catholic Church. The church consistently lags in terms of inclusion and acceptance, and numerous allegations of sexual abuse against children tarnish its reputation. Are we meant to ignore this, behaving as model Catholics?

What strikes me as humorous about Vance’s article is his assertion that critics of the Catholic Church possess some bias against it. This couldn’t be further away from reality. The entirety of his commentary—which labels him as a scab—seems more like a disgruntled male lamenting that a woman didn’t wish to confess with him. He concludes with, “Only by rejecting her record of anti-Catholic bias will we ensure religious liberty for all.”

Honestly, it’s not that deep. Joe Biden, the sitting President and Harris’s running mate from 2020, IS CATHOLIC. RAISED IN THIS FAITH. Your attempts to rally Pennsylvania Catholics against her are nothing short of pathetic.
