Star Trek (2009), directed by J.J. Abrams, reimagined the classic characters from Star Trek: The Original Series, placing Lt. Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) on a divergent path that almost saw them swapping starships. The catalyst for the creation of the Kelvin timeline is Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan time traveler bent on revenge against Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the United Federation of Planets. In an act of destruction in 2258, Nero wreaked havoc on a Klingon moon and obliterated entire armadas with his formidable 24th-century starship, the Narada. During her time at Starfleet Academy, Uhura showcased her talents by decoding a Klingon distress signal. At the same time, James T. Kirk faced a disciplinary hearing for his unconventional tactics in the Kobayashi Maru scenario, just as Starfleet prepared to protect Vulcan from Nero’s impending assault.

In response to Nero’s threat, Starfleet Academy activated its cadets for frontline duty, distributing trainees across various starships. Meanwhile, Dr. Leonard “Bones”McCoy (Karl Urban) aided Kirk in sneaking aboard the USS Enterprise, Starfleet’s latest flagship. However, Uhura was frustrated to learn that Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto), her boyfriend, had assigned her to the USS Farragut. Faced with her displeasure, Spock ultimately relented, allowing her to join Kirk aboard the Enterprise.

In the original Star Trek timeline, Kirk had previously served on the Farragut, where he held the rank of Lieutenant before ascending to First Officer of the Enterprise. In contrast, both Kirk and Uhura bypassed service on the Farragut in the 2009 film. This turn of events proved fortuitous for Uhura, as the USS Farragut was ultimately destroyed by Nero’s forces, while the Enterprise survived, arriving just in time to avoid the onslaught. As a result, Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) and his crew lived on to fight another day.

Discovering How Kirk and Uhura Joined the Enterprise

Although Star Trek: The Original Series never elaborated on how the Enterprise crew first united, Abrams’ Star Trek (2009) provided an imaginative backstory for both the Kelvin and Prime timelines. In contrast, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, set within the Prime timeline, offers insights into how Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and his crew came together. Here, Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) is depicted as a Starfleet cadet who, under Captain Pike (Anson Mount), is assigned to the USS Enterprise.

Notably, in an alternate future seen in the season one finale of Strange New Worlds, Kirk’s role is reversed; he serves as Captain of the USS Farragut, not the Enterprise. Throughout season two, Kirk becomes the First Officer aboard the Farragut and encounters Uhura when he beams onto the Enterprise to learn from Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn). Their friendship blossoms when Nyota introduces Kirk to Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck), showcasing a different evolution of their relationship compared to Star Trek (2009). Ultimately, these narratives reveal how Kirk and Uhura are united aboard the Starship Enterprise across both timelines.
