Former rapper and singer ILoveMakonnen has recently declared his retirement from the music business. In response, podcaster Joe Budden shared his thoughts during the latest episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, which aired on YouTube on Sunday, September 15. Budden remarked:
“I don’t care I don’t really shop at Costco often… you gonna kill sh*t on a Tuesday at Costcos… congratulations to Makonnen hope you got everything you wanted from this game… but you was trash anyway nobody sad…”
Budden claimed he was unaware of ILoveMakonnen’s retirement plans. He even raised questions about whether Makonnen had been actively involved in the music scene prior to his retirement announcement.
ILoveMakonnen reportedly announced his retirement on September 5 through an Instagram post, where he stated:
“I’m retiring ILoveMakonnen. Thank you all for your support and interests over the years. It’s time I move on and go live my life. Heavy in the streets in my last song.”
For those unfamiliar, Makonnen gained popularity in 2014 with his hit single Tuesday, which brought him mainstream success.

The 35-year-old former artist, ILoveMakonnen, whose real name is Makonnen Kamali Sheran, was born in April 1989 in Los Angeles, California. He began his music career by sharing songs on Myspace. His talent captured the attention of Metro Boomin in March 2014, who was impressed by Makonnen’s music and decided to collaborate with him.
The pair went on to produce six tracks together, after which Boomin connected Makonnen with Sonny Digital and 808 Mafia, who were also taken with his sound.
The pivotal moment in Makonnen’s career arrived with the release of his 2014 single Tuesday. In a Complex interview published on September 7, 2024, Makonnen discussed how the song was created during a freestyle session in the studio. He explained:
“I was in the room at an Ear Drummers studio, and it was a producer, Mars, with Ear Drummers, and Rae Sremmurd was there when they was still up and coming.”
He continued:
“Mike WiLL was, like, gone in LA… And so I got to go up to the house… We drove up there, and we was just playing around and making shit. And then it was like Monday night. I was just freestyling about it.”
ILoveMakonnen shared that everyone in the studio found the freestyle to be “dope.”In the same interview, he also reflected on how he adjusted to the sudden fame that followed his hit track, admitting that it led to difficulties as he acclimated to the limelight, including substance abuse.
Elaborating on his experiences, Makonnen recounted facing significant mental and physical challenges during this period, including dealing with body image issues related to being “overweight.”
This isn’t the first time ILoveMakonnen has hinted at retirement. Back in 2016, he initially announced his retirement but continued to release music. As of now, there is no further information regarding his current retirement status.
